New windows, popups, cause browser to hang

I'm running IE 6 and whenever I try to open a link on a
page the browser hangs for a minute or two. It does this
also on any popup window. It's torture to try and search
the internet for anything because the browser freezes and
hangs whenever there's a popup or a new link clicked. I
would appreciate any help. Thanks.
