So far (since the SE version appeared) they're averaging about one or
two definition files per version. It's obvious to me that this is an
intentional tactic on Lavasoft's part and that it's going to continue.

On their page at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ they say:

"You can also use the webupdate component implemented in Ad-Aware to
install this update"

but as far as I know, with the freeware version you have to manually
install the new version of the program after uninstalling the previous
one. This is verified by their download information page saying the
following:

"To download the latest Ad-Aware SE Personal (freeware) build please
go to our downloads page and choose the appropriate mirror site. Note:
The installer will recognize a previous installation of Ad-Aware and
will prompt you to uninstall it prior to completing the installation
of the new build."

That's a serious PITA at this upgrade frequency level and it looks to
me like the webupdate feature is intentionally crippled in order to
sway you towards buying the "Plus" version.

The program is free and as a user I have no rights, but I can live
without Ad-Aware. I'm smart enough that I don't need it anyway (always
gotten clean reports) and can live with only Spybot S&D.

Off of my system it goes. This time for good.

YMMV but I personally have better things to do with my time than spend
it continually upgrading this &@#$!! program.

Good, now I no longer hafta hear you continuously bitchin' about
something you obviously know absolutely nothing about, just to promote
your own freeware agenda, everytime someone posts an update info post

You have an agenda as well, promoting Paypal / E-bay. Not that I mind.
I just think that this is a bit humorous.

Nice of you to snip that out. Since, however, it's very relevant to
the discussion I will reinsert it:

Wrong again! There is no requirement to uninstall a prior version. The
installer checks for previously installed components and gives you the
option to uninstall it or not.

And also, from the installation process itself:

"Ad-Aware SE may not function correctly if previous versions are not
removed prior to installation."

so effectively, you *have* to uninstall the previous version.

Guess that was a little harsh on my part. It's a good program I guess,
but I frankly don't need it.
Good, now I no longer hafta hear you continuously bitchin'

Oh, so we're going there are we.... See my final remarks then.

Obviously (see the above quotes), I *do* know what I'm talking about.

Eh.... what agenda would that be?
everytime someone posts an update info post on Ad-Adaware Basic.

You mean Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition.

I presume you know how to use a killfile, don't you? Then why don't
you pull your head out of your ass and killfile me if my posts bother
you so much? Or does your rectal-cranial inversion problem have a

Right John - it's called Free Enterprize and as long as that continues, they
will probably keep offering a freebie to entice you to cough up a few bucks
and pay your way - finally.
That's a serious PITA at this upgrade frequency level and it looks to

You're a serious free-loader that likes to complain a lot. Jeeeeeezus....
it's a free program - quit yer bitchin.

Live with it or without it, I'm sure Lavasoft could really care less what
you think.
Off of my system it goes. This time for good.

Ohhhhh yeah, I forgot you complained about this not to long ago as I recall
and you said it was off your system then. What happened? Found it was one
of the better "free" programs out there and put it back on - eh?
YMMV but I personally have better things to do with my time than spend
it continually upgrading this &@#$!! program.

Yes, like complaining about freeware programs.

Don't be silly. Just because a program is free doesn't mean it is above
criticism. I share John's feelings about Adaware; they seem to rewrite
it far too often for no particular reason... I have no idea why they
bother, when the original was perfectly functional. I suppose they are
trying to keep sweet those punters who believe that an app has to be
'updated' regularly to retain credibility.

In my humble opinion, if Spybot S&D didn't exist or wasn't free,
there would be no free version of Ad-aware. Lavasoft is a company,
therefore it needs to sell to stay alive.

I dunno; my recollection is that Adaware was freeware from the start and
it is fairly recently that buyware builds have been introduced.
S+D is a fairly recent app isn't it?

Go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4363.html and download the
executable only:

"Close Ad-Aware if running and unzip the Ad-Aware.exe file to your Ad-Aware
directory (on most systems C:program FilesLavasoftAd-Aware SE Personal).

When asked to replace the existing Ad-Aware.exe file click "yes".

Now you should be running Ad-Aware SE Personal build 1.05."

Pretty simple.

The SE version attempts to identify unknown variants :-

"With Lavasoft's all new Code Sequence Identification (CSI) technology,
you will not only be protected from know content, but will also have
advanced protection against many of their unknown variants."

With some spyware getting increasingly devious and virus like,
I should think this will be a worthwhile feature. I guess the recent
flurry of SE updates means they are still perfecting the code.

However there is still a current reference file for adaware
6 build 181 (dated 14 th September) so it would seem for the
time being you could get by with the old pre SE version.

Version 1.05 is much faster at scaning than 1.04 and the
installer will uninstall version 1.04 as part of the install
process (took about 1 sec for it to do this on my PC)

My thanks to Renato for the heads up.

This is referring to the reference file not the full program.

"Latest definition file: SE1R8 13.09.2004
Please Note Version SE Build 1.05 is now available! This download is for use with this version only.
Manual Installation: Unzip the archive, replace the existing file and restart Ad-Aware\Ad-Watch.
You can also use the webupdate component implemented in Ad-Aware to install this update."

However I think it's unrealistic to expect Lavasoft to provide and pay for the
bandwidth for non paying users to download the 2.5meg program anyway.
And with 80 million users I expect this would both be expensive and adversely
impact on the download of reference files from their servers too.

Yep, you're right. I discovered this last night. And this is
apparently a new feature. However, it would still be nice if the
program update (as opposed to the definition file updates) frequency
slowed down a little. It may be happening because Ad-Aware SE is new.

Guess I was a little harsh on them and I retract my earlier remarks.

coming up with new versions, and here you have already discussed it.

Thanks!
