My computer came with programs installed. I have windows xp home edition
build v ersion 2600.

I had visual studio, word suite 8, powerpoint, clipboard , .NET FRAMEWORKMy
notebook stopped reading cd/dvd drive and would show an error which said it
could not be found. I contacted manufacture who advised me to backup files to
the D:\ drive and reinstall xp from the disk that was sent with notebook. He
said it would only effect the C: drive (or partition?) Now , I can't access
the programs above. I have spoken to Microsoft, and Acer neither seem to be
able to help. When I look in system info and advanced systeminfo. I see
files that are faded which seem to contain these iprogram. when i try to
install, run or activate I get this message WDA failed to install missing
manditory module svr\db. I found a readme file that said system contain an
autorun. feature that loads xp pro and
additional software but agian I can not access the folder. Can someone
please help

Hello!
As you got a notebook you will have got one hard drive installed to it,
right.
As you have reinstalled Windows XP to the hard drive you might not be able
to access those programs again unless you have installed them again, as
well.

(They are still there but some files might be missing. )

Thanks for your response Steve. I believe I have 2 hard drives. Isn't that
what a dual processor is? I have a C and D harddrive. I did write down the
reg key for some of the missing components. Do you think contacting the
support information and providing them with the Keys will do any good?

As previously posted, laptops only have one internal hard drive. It may be
partitioned into C: and D: drives. I think you were wrongly advised to copy
the files to the D: partition in the circumstances. If by reg key you mean
serial numbers, you seem to have copied applications (programs) to the D:
partition. You cannot do that manually and expect them to work. You can copy
user-generated files such as Word documents, music files and digital camera
images. This sounds like a mess to me. You will need to reinstall these
programs if they are to work again.

Boy that's not what I wanted to hear. But thanks for the info. I
reinstalled from the oem disk so is it correct to assume that since they
didn't install they don't exist in the disk. Are preloaded programs simply
lost when you re-install xp

You should contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support or read the manual or
look on their tech support website for instructions and information
about what happens when you use their recovery cd's and how to
reinstall preloaded applications.

Yes, I'm sorry. I am sure the processor is not the hard drive. As you bought
a notebook these days it might have a dual core processor sticking onto the
motherboard of it.

The hard drive is the device on which your data was stored even as the
electricity was off. This is in fact a bit difficult cause you could have
two or
more drives labeled C:, D: ..., but also just one drive and several
partitions
on it named C:, D: and so forth as well. Notebooks normally as well as
desktop computers come with just one drive installed. In notebooks it's a
matter of weight, power consuption, space etc. for shure. Why it is so with
desktops I have not even myself clearly figured.

The hard drive is a mechanical component containing a spinning disc that
will end up, and this is just a matter of time, failing some day. That means
it
will be broken and can not be fixed the way it would be back working. So
all the data on the then broken drive were lost.

Thus, it is a must, as you don't want to have your data put to paper, to
have
a second hard drive at least, in case of a natural disaster like fires,
floodings
and so on a third one at a different place was the best decision. This
sounds
a little expensive first but as you won't pay for some kind of, in your
case,
external hard drive or USB stick, CD or DVD burner you are better
advised not to be using a computer but processing your data a traditional
way.

The best way for you I think was to buy first an external hard drive. They
are no longer so expensive. Now, connect it to the notebook and copy all
your private data to the external drive. You can't, as for my knowledge,
safe programs data in a reasonable way these days. Then, while it does
sound you made your Windows installation a mess, yet, format the drive
the way you got just one partition left on it, C: normally. Affix all the
space
to the one drive cause it's the one mechanical component and will fail as a
whole.

Remind yourself of making backups of your data to the external hard drive
from time to time.

Programs which were installed and you got no disc for or you can't
download from the internet again are lost as well.
