I have an icon in the tray stating that New Updates are available, however
when I click on the icon it shows me the schedule set for automatically
installing updates but doesn't give me an opportunity to install the updates
now. I am logged on with an "administrator" account and expected that
updates could be installed by an adminstrator as was the case in Windows XP.
I don't even see which updates it supposedly has available, only the ones
that have already been installed.

Help.

open the Start menu and type "windows update" and hit enter; then you'll
find a button in order to install the updates right now!

Bill,

Thanks for the response, but I get a message that windows cannot find
windows update when I enter the command in the RUN window.

Yes, but he didn't say to use the RUN Dialog. That's getting a few people
confused in Vista. Instead of using RUN, just open the start menu and type
the name of the application/file right there in the Start Menu...

Thanks for the clarification. When you mentioned typing the command in the
START menu, it triggered the fact that I had the "classic" view configured
and as such no way to simply enter the command. I switched to, I guess you
would call it native mode and was able to type the "windows update" command.
However all it brings up is a Update Services RC window and it does not show
a button for installing any updates. It does have a Connect to Server
selection under ACTIONS, but when I try to plug in my non-standard port,
let's call it 8888, it fails to connect to the server.

What happened to the ability for admins of their systems to simply install
WSUS downloaded updates whenever they wanted to before the automatic
scheduled time?
