With great trepidation, decided to install XP Pro on this new computer
instead of ME. Now I've got a ? I hope someone can help me with.

Where/what is the equivalent of Scandisk?

The answer to this - and probably all your other questions can be found by
using the Help and Support Centre.

Double click "My Computer" and then right-click the local drive you want to
scan and select properties then go to the Tools tab. From here go to Error
checking and then Check Now. A new window will open when you check both
boxes and select Start. It will then tell you that it can schedule it at
the next time system boots to which you say Yes. The restart computer.

Chkdsk. Run it from the Start | Run line.
