new to vista

I am looking for places to go for help on Vista. I was one of those who did
not switch to Vista because of various incompatibilities. But now I find
myself in a position of managing an all Vista network. Does anyone know of
any good places to go for extensive support?
I am also trying to decide whether I should keep XP on my laptop or upgrade
to Vista. It will handle either one easily. I will probably be managing the
network from this laptop. Any suggestions?
I want to do two different networks that can't access each other, but use
the same internet connection. All I have now is a cable modem, a linksys
wrt54g, 3 wired / 1 wireless on one network, and 1 wired / 2 wireless on
another network. I will be adding wired computers to both networks soon.

Thanks for any advice on any part of this. If I could just find a good web
site or something I could take care of alot of this myself. I am just not
familiar with Vista at all.

You're at one of the best places--this newsgroup.

What does "It will handle either one easily" mean? What is its
hardware configuration, particularly the amount of RAM?

Do you know that the are Vista drivers available for all the
components in the laptop?

Every time Microsoft comes out with a new OS...it's touted as the greatest
and the most radically new thing
under the sun...

Nihil Novum Sub Solem

Vista and XP are not terribly different...and if you are familiar with XP...
it should take you about ten minutes to be able to use Vista.

Vista does actually have a few good, useful features that you may like.
It also has a few features that may bother you.

Maybe you should do some non-destructive re-partitioning of your drive...
then install Vista and dual boot.

That way you can use Vista...there is no better way to learn about it than
using it.

OTOH: If there are any problems...at least you have a working XP
installation to use

I have seen many problems with so called upgrades from Vista..The one thing
I have learned is you cannot polish a turd !! (excuse the language)
Personally I chose to build a high end machine and load Vista from
scratch...I had no problems at all...Once I found that the system was stable
and not about to crash I loaded all my games and software on it..Since Day 1
this machine has been screaming fast and rock solid...As for your other
question for a good site, All I know is these newsgroups have helped me over
the yrs and I like to browse the posts and attempt to help people if I can
(rare but possible)..you will find good responsible answers to just about
anything you need to know..They will also not answer if they do
not...Unfortunately you will find some that will not be so helpful as
well...just my 3 cents....Best of luck !!

What did you do to deserve this? You haven't died and gone to Hell by any
chance?

Hehehe, that's a good one. So you think Vista is supportable? Funny.

Sure. Move on to a REAL operating system and leave those toys behind. You're
an adult, aren't you?

Yes, so? What difference does all that make? And you say you're responsible
for administering a network?

Poor you.

Cheers.

That's where I was 6 months ago. Now XP is far behind. Not looking back.

What philo suggested may be a good thing for you to do actually. You may
still need your XP for some tasks for a while. Certain software most likely
will have trouble adjusting to Vista.

I think his idea is the best. But future belongs to Vista, have no doubt
about it.

My laptop came with Vista ultimate pre-installed. It was custom built to
handle that edition. I soon realized there were to many problems with my
existing hardware and software to deal with, so I installed XP Pro until I
felt the time was right to go back. I figured now was probably good since
the new network is all Vista machines.

Sorry, I'm confused by that. You say there were "were to many problems
with [your] existing hardware and software." Have you changed that
hardware and software? If not, why would you expect the problems to
have gone away?
