Hi -

I just switched to using Outlook 2003. It says that there is supposed to
be a notifier that pops up when you have email. This never happens, and
I've checked to see that that option is set up properly and it is. It's
set to show the notifier and I preview it and it works fine. But when I
have new email, it never shows. Now, do I have to have outlook up for
this to happen? Or can I have the program shut down like other email
programs and the notifier will pop up telling me I have email?

I've tried it with it running too and the notifier does not pope up. I
have it set to automatically get email every 5 minutes.

Is there something I'm missing? Any help would be appreciated.

It doesn't work for webmail. Could that be the problem? The option is in OL,
Tools, options, preferences tab, email options, advanced email options,
desktop alert settings button refines the settings. Ridiculously hidden, IMO.

I don't have webmail. It all comes from a server. I did go inot the
advanced options and the desktop alert settings. I have it set to alert
but it doesn't.

do you have rules (Tools/Rules and Alerts...) that moves all incomming
mails to another folder? Then you have to set the option "Display a Desktop
Alert" in this rule or rules. Otherwise Outlook will not display the alert.

I do have rules that filter other incoming mail into another folder. But
I also do have some that come into the main folder as well. I checked in
the rules but I don't see a setting for allowing the alert.

It has a peculiar name in the Rule and Alerts in 2003 but it is there (I
don't have 2003 in front of me at the moment) and says something like
"Display a specific message in the item alert window". Whilst in the Rules
and Alerts function, scroll down on the screen that gives the options to
"what do you want to do.." and it will be there.

Tools/Rules and Alerts... -> markup the rule and click "Change Rule/Edit
Rule Setting..."
click "Next" then you should have a windows with "Wich do you want to do
with the message?" in the first line. scroll down an check the entry
"display a Desktop Alert"

do this for every rule
