New to Networking - How to set up?

I'm new to home networking and I'm having a hard time getting file sharing
set up. I have 2 computers, one desktop and one laptop (both 1 month old).
I have a dual wireless, wired router. The desktop computer has ethernet, but
no wireless.

When I hooked up the desktop, the internet worked automatically, as did the
laptop with the wireless connection to the internet. The problem is with
file and printer sharing.

I went through the network setup wizard and tried to set things up, but it
doesn't seem to work. They both are on the MsHome network (standard name)
and they both have unique names. When I try to map a network drive, I click
on the MsHome thing, and wait while it searches for the shared folders (I
shared the root of the C: on both computers) but it finds nothing and lists
nothing under MsHome.

Can anyone help?

For one thing, sharing the root of C: is a Bad Idea. It leaves all of your
system wide open. There shouldn't be any need, for example, to share the
Windows directory. It's much better to share ONLY the files or folders that
you want to share. There's nothing wrong with sharing multiple folders (I
have about 12 folders shared across three computers).

As for your other problem, in Network Neighborhood, go to Network
Connections and right-click your LAN connection, and select Properties. On
the General tab, check to see if "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks" is enabled. Also, check TCP/IP to make sure both machines are on
the same subnet.

There are a lot of possibilities for problems with Windows Networking (Network
Neighborhood), and you need to diagnose your problems in an organised way.
