New to DSL - Modem is Westell Versalink 327w - Will not connect to Internt

P

Papa

I have a desktop running XP Pro. I have a Compaq Laptop running XP Home. I
have a Westell 327w which is a combination DSL Modem, Ethernet Router, and
Wireless
Router.

My desktop accesses the internet ok. I can share files between the two. I
have ran "The Internet Connection Wizard" countless times to no avail. I am
trying to "share a DSL Connection", but each has its own Ethernet
connection. The connection type is "PPPoE". I have tried using Ethernet
and Wireless to connect. I have a built in "Broadbcom 802.11b/g WLAN"
Wireless card in my Laptop.

I have many questions. With this system I have to login. I surely
shouldn't Login with both computers. Maybe some one can point me to some
good info sites for this situation. Any information will be greatly
appreciated.

In addition to what PA Bear states.

Verizon has its own PRIVATE News Space.

On the Verizon News Server is the News Group; 0.verizon.adsl

And so you did on Oct 22.

I would reply but I don't support wireless networking because it is NOT secure. I only
support wired LANs.

I can't make it work WIRED ONLY either. I think I am missing something.
Thank you for responding.

Papa:

Assuming the Westell is in Router, not bridge mode, then NO PCs behind the Router need PPPoE
software nor *any* Verizon software on them. The Router will perform the PPPoE connection
to Verizon [fBA territories use PPPoE while most fGTE territories use DHCP, albeit some have
switched over to PPPoE]. All nodes should be set to DHCP and should get their LAN addresses
via the DHCP server in the Router. All nodes should have a MTU value of 1500 while the
Router should have a value of 1492 if you use PPPoE.

You don't use ICS. That is only for a PC that is to act as a Router.

I don't know what SPECIFIC information your are looking for.

You have what is called Poin to Point protocol OVER Ethernet.
Each computer can have a connection seperately from the other.
The doownside is, each must have an ISP account or the ISP must allow
multiple users and / or you get charged accordingly.

The soulution is to hook the laptop to a hub that connects to the desktop
with a second NIC.
Use ICS to create the Gateway on the HOST.
The host will do the dialling, the client will share the connection.
You only need a standard default internet connection on the laptop.

So to set it up both ways,
1. both machines are on using hub, share links and connect to internet.
2. Host machine is not dialed up, the laptop is not on the hub, and you want
to dail up wirelessly from your bed.

You keep the router in place and set the FWF ports as needed if it is
blocking any router needs.

This means you will need to use your laptop firewall like you were at a
hotel when dialup from bed. Set WFW to NO exceptions, dialup over the PPPoE,
when done, disconnect, set WFW back to exceptions.

There may be some port stuff between the router and Desktop WFW that need to
be open?

Note when Laptop is from the BED file and print sharing is only blocked by
NO EXCEPTIONS, otherwise uncheck on NIC before dialup.

Sorry. That is NOT the answer.

The OP has a Westell modem/Router and can have up to 253 computers share the one Verizon WAN
address. The Westell, not the PC, will make the PPPoE connection. The OP does NOT need ICS
at all and the Westell is also a 4-port 10/100Mb/s Ethernet switch so a hub is not needed.

Dave
BTW: WFW (I use WfW) is the acronym for Windows for Workgroups v3.11.

No. The Westell is wired 4-port 10/100Mb/s E-switch *and* WAP.

PPPoE is NOT needed on *any* LAN node, wired or wireless.

| OK, laptop is wireless nic set to PPPoE but it will also need a Wire NIC for
| hub. then each will have its own network connect and it will be pre set so
| that there is no changes needed. You are on the wire hub or you are PPPoEing

OK, I was interupting the OP's comment about PPPoE as a network connection
defined on his windows software.

I set up a simular wireless / LAN for a woman's office.
She wanted her laptop wired as the base station with printer and second
monitor, but then free to connect wireless. She had PPPoE over E software.
Her roomate connected wireless with a different account.
