Hi:
There are three computers in my family room and I want networking on all
three.
I got a 'self-help' DSL kit and installed everything my DSL provider told.
However, DSL failed , because of 'bad'/wrong modem that my DSL sent.

Now, I spent whole morning to recover many of user's names along
with passwords. Plus, very slow start and other problems brought on
by failed DSL set-up.

My question is;
Am I able to make 'least' used computer as being 'Master?'
Because, I can NOT afford to spend hours' spent if another DSL
failure happens.
The computer I used for 'DSL set-up'/networking is a most used and
important computer, then I hate to mess-up again, although I'm sure
another failed DSL set-up/networking never happens once I got a right
modem.

I'd appreciate it if you could offer me any suggetion and advices on this
regard.
Thanks in advance.

The ideal way is to get a router/gateway like D-Link, Belkin, Netgear, Linksys, etc.
Belkin & Netgear are available at any Staples outlet.) It provides a firewall on the WAN side
to protect your shared files, it will allow you to share the internet connection, it will
negotiate the PPPoE or other type of IP connection automatically (you don't need ANY connection
software anymore), and doesn't cost much more than a good firewall.

Is the modem an external modem?
Does the modem connect using Ethernet (LAN)? USB?
Get a router and connect the modem to the router. This will let you network
easily and each computer will be able to use the DSL service.

Hi:
Thanks all, for your helpful and knowledgeable responses/answers
on DSL problem.
This morning, I called DSL provider and we tested over the phone spending
about 20 minutes. He said the problem is 'Modem/Router' that is 'Westell
Wireless Gateway' and external modem with Ethernet(LAN).

The guy told me that Modem will be received within 48 hours, even tonite.
Also, he said that because of 'bad' Modem, I should not use DSL even on
the first computer that I set-up by using the CD sent by its provider.

I live in the East Coast, US, ... then if you know about 'Verizon,' then
you
may easily figure things out. It's a self-help DSL kit, called "Verizon"
DSL.

After DSL set-up, I want 'Printer' sharing with one of computers which is
about 12 ft. away from the kitchen where I plan to use 'Laptop.'

How to make/share Printer by using 'networking' that was set-up by DSL
provider? Is Laptop capable to share a printer which connected with
desktop?

Thanks for any help on this,...'sharting' printer between two, desktop and
laptop.
