Need help (step by step??) installing OS in new system. Have spent last
several days trying and am now seriously A F U.

OLD SYS: NEW SYS:

MB 8430TX ASUS P5P800
CPU PENTIUM II MMX PENTIUM IV
CLOCK 266MHZ 3.4GHZ
FS FAT32 NTFS
HDD 4GB 160GB
RAM 128MB 512MB

ADDITIONALS:

A 3.5 floppy 3.5 floppy
C HDD HDD
D ZIP 100 ZIP 100
E CDROM ZIP 250
F CDR/W CDROM
G DVD R/W
H U S B 2.0
MASS STOR
I U S B 2.0
MASS STOR
SLOTS NOT A CONCERN AT THIS POINT.

PROBLEM: Need to move everything except OS from old system to new. Because
FAT and NTFS not compatible, attempted to install 98 on new system. Then was
going to unstall XP as upgrade OS. N O T!!!!!!!!!
Now have drive letters reassigned.. NO idea how I did that. U S B 2.0 and
modem not recognized (no drivers either). Can't partition and/or format HDD
(XP will only format if it then installs itself as OS). Can't format in DOS
either(when I can get command prompt showing). In short........ "CHARLIE
FOX!!!!!"

Can I get a step by step to: clear the HDD, install 98 and/or mirror the
old HDD, then get XP installed and up???????

The DUMMY needs MAJOR guidance.. The "DOPE SLAP" I can
accept....................

Thnx for assistance....

What version XP do you have? Is it an upgrade version or full retail?
Trying to install 98 and then upgrade?
You can upgrade w/o actually installing 98 by just inserting 98 CD when
asked for qualifying material.

How do you know drive letter assignment if computer doesn't boot?
And doesn't recognize USB or modem?

Do you have PCI controller installed?
you have 5 potential IDE drives listed?

Since you didn't indicate which type of XP CD you have, the
following instructions are based on the assumption that you
have a Retail Upgrade CD. If it's a Full version, you won't be
asked to provide the Win98 CD.

First off, disconnect both Zip Drives and the USB drives. The
only drives that should be present when installing XP are your
floppy drive, internal hard drives and optical (CD/DVD) drives.

Next, configure your BIOS to boot from the CD. Put the XP
Upgrade CD in and start the computer. During the installation,
you can set up your hard drive however you want. You'll be able
to delete or create partitions and format drives. Keep in mind
that if after completing the installation you want to change
the size and/or number of drives present on your hard drive,
you'll have to use third party software such as Partition Magic
or BootIT NG. For that reason, you should plan ahead of time
whether you want your hard drive to be one large drive or a
number of smaller drives. Some people opt for using a portion
of their hard drive for the OS and the rest of the drive for
their data files.

At some point during the installation, you'll be asked to
provide qualifying media to show you're eligible to use the
Upgrade CD. This is when you insert your Windows 98
installation CD.

Once the installation of XP is complete, install your AV and
firewall software. Then go on the internet and update Windows
and your security software.

You're probably going to find that you'll need to obtain XP
drivers for some of your hardware. Once you have all your
hardware properly configured, install your applications.
Next, put your old hard drive in the new system as a slave
drive. Make sure you configure the jumpers on the back of each
hard drive correctly. Look for a diagram on the top of the HD
to see how the jumpers should be set. Copy all the data you
want to retain from your old installation. The fact that the
old hard drive is formatted with FAT32 is not an issue. Windows
XP is capable of reading FAT32 drives. It's Win98 that has the
problem of reading NTFS drives. Once you've copied the files,
remove the old hard drive and reset the jumpers.

Finally, reconnect your Zip and USB drives.

See, toldya I was a dummy.
XP disk is an OEM version 2002. Not an upgrade disk. Has the usual warnings
attached ... do not copy, for use with new system only.

If XP can read the old HDD, does that mean I can simply set up a DCC and
then move stuff ? Couldn't be that simple, could it?

Far as disconnecting hdwr, should be able to do that from device manager,
right ? Don't mind pulling plugs, just less work to use mouse.

Meantime, I'll print the two articles.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You're not the first person to
make that mistake and you won't be the last.

If you're talking about using a null modem cable to create a
DCC with your old system, yes, you should be able to do that.
You could, if you want, use the File and Settings Transfer
wizard to bring your files over from the old hard drive. You
can also just copy whatever files and folders you wish to
retain from the old installation. Personally, I've found it a
lot easier to use a crossover ethernet cable connceted to both
network cards.

My comments with regard to disconnecting hardware apply to the
new system. You shouldn't have any of the Zip drives and USB
drives connected to the new system until the XP installation is
complete. Having those drives connected during the installation
will cause your XP installation to end up on a drive other than
C. For instance, if both Zip drives were connected, XP will
assign C and D to those drives and you'll end up having E be
the first drive letter on your hard drive. This cofiguration
could lead to problems going forward. New System -> Floppy
drive, Hard Drive, CD/DVD drives + mouse, keyboard and monitor.
That's it!
