New spyware definitions 5733 installed

M

Mike Linhardt

FYI:

I'm using the following:

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.614
This version expires on: 12/31/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5733 (7/11/2005 2:27:20 PM)
Internet connection: Through a proxy setup in MSIE.

I've noticed upgrading from spyware definitions 5731 to
SD 5733 everything shows successful - including the
install step but each time I click on File/Check For
Updates it again downloads 5733 and begins installing it.

Not sure if this is a feature or bug but it makes the
user think there is always an update available each time
they try and do a manual update.

No problems, just thought I would leave feedback about
this feature/bug.

Keep up the good work! So far it has identified 4
spyware items to date and resolved each one.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike

Picked up your problem today which was identical to mine.
It is a known bug. Try this for a permanent fix - I picked
it up from this site today and it works fine for me.

Good Luck

This is a quote from Robin Walker:

After much debugging, I have found that the problem with
definition update
failures and repetition is because of an incorrect version
of the file
gcUnCompress.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ (for XP) or
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\
(for
2000 or systems upgraded from 2000).

The incorrect version is of length 130,272 bytes.
The correct version is of length 95,448 bytes.

To update your system to install the correct version of
the file, do the
following:

1. In the System Notification Area, right-click on the
MSAS icon and select
"Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware".
2. In Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, locate
the file
"gcUnCompress.dll", right-click on it, and select "Delete".
3. In Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs",
select "Microsoft
AntiSpyware"
and click button "Change".
4. Click "Next".
5. Select "Update Microsoft AntiSpyware", click "Next".
6. Click "Install".
7. When the re-installation finishes, click "Finish".
8. In Explorer, in folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, check that
"gcUnCompress.dll" is now 95,448 bytes long, by right-
clicking it and
selecting "Properties".
9. Launch MSAS, pull down the File menu and select "Check
for updates" -
this time it really will update your definition files to
the latest version.
10. In Explorer, open the folder C:\Program
Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware,
and
satisfy yourself that the modification dates of the three
definition files
have changed:
gcDeterminationData.gcd
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

Done!

If you are on build .614--see help, about--use the information in the reply
from StuNun.

Robin Walker's fix is what is needed.

This is the currently available fix for the issue of build .614, and
definition updates cycling--repeating on each try:
