update to version 5733 doesn't take

M

Mule

Each time MS AntiSpyware updates to version 5733
definitions, it doesn't take. On reboot, it reverts to
whatever the prior version was, and will update to 5733
again the next time I have the program look for updates.

I've been having the same problem. Can anyone help us
out, what's the problem, and how can it be fixed? Up

Try this solution, found by Robin Walker [MVP]:

"After much debugging, I have found that the problem with definition update
failures and repetition is because of an incorrect version of the file
gcUnCompress.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ (for XP) or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ (for
2000 or systems upgraded from 2000).

The incorrect version is of length 130,272 bytes.
The correct version is of length 95,448 bytes.

To update your system to install the correct version of the file, do the
following:

1. In the System Notification Area, right-click on the MSAS icon and select
"Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware".
2. In Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, locate the file
"gcUnCompress.dll", right-click on it, and select "Delete".
3. In Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs", select "Microsoft AntiSpyware"
and click button "Change".
4. Click "Next".
5. Select "Update Microsoft AntiSpyware", click "Next".
6. Click "Install".
7. When the re-installation finishes, click "Finish".
8. In Explorer, in folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, check that
"gcUnCompress.dll" is now 95,448 bytes long, by right-clicking it and
selecting "Properties".
9. Launch MSAS, pull down the File menu and select "Check for updates" -
this time it really will update your definition files to the latest version.
10. In Explorer, open the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware, and
satisfy yourself that the modification dates of the three definition files
have changed:
gcDeterminationData.gcd
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

Done!

You won't ever have to manually install the definition files again, nor will
the update keep repeating every time you try."

I can confirm that the method suggested below does indeed
work. Thanks!

This also worked for me, however as part of the process I
had to take the MSAS icon out of the system tray and stop
the real time protection. How do I get it back there?

Launch Microsoft AntiSpyware, or restart Windows.

I am afraid this hasn't worked for me. I am in the Uk
and have Windows XP (Home). When I
rechecked "gcUnCompress.dll" is still 130.272 in length.
Should I have restarted the system"

Try Robin Walker's thoughts first.

If that isn't effective, I'd again do the repair install which was part of
the original fix:

control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, Change,
Update.

This should work, but perhaps not permanently. There is a bug which results
in real-time protection working, but without the tray icon in place.
Another approach to fixing that might be to simply shut down Microsoft
Antispyware, and then delete all the .GCD files from \program
files\microsoft antispyware. Then restart Microsoft Antispyware. All the
files will be rebuilt--you will need to go through the original wizard
again, and will lose access to quarantined items, and any customized
settings.

Make sure that you are using build 614 of Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 (pull
down the Help menu and select About... to make sure).

If you are not using build 614, then download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/spyware/ .
Delete the gcUnCompress.dll file again.
Install the newly downlaoded version of MSAS.

B

Bill Sanderson

Are you on build .614?
See Help, about--should read 1.0.614.

Did you delete the gcUnCompress.dll file, before performing the repair
installation?

I'd suggest re-trying the procedure, checking carefully to be sure that the
file is gone before going on to the update repair.

Is there third-party software that might be "protecting" system files?

Have checked and the version is:

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.614
This version expires on: 31/12/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5733 (13/07/2005 16:27:39)

Have tried the suggested fix three times now and it
hasn't worked. Still keeps updating from 5731 - 5733.
Perhaps I should wait until MS solve the problem - or
uninstall and reinstall MSAS.

This will be becuase you still have the wrong version of gcUnCompress.dll in
SYSTEM32.

This is an interesting situation, one of the few documented occasions on
which the DLL update has failed with version 614.

Do you have any 3rd-party "protection" software which might be preventing
files being deleted or updated in SYSTEM32? If so, can you diable that
software and try again?

After you have deleted gcUnCompress.dll, if you refresh the folder view, has
it gone, or does it re-appear of its own accord?

How quickly do you run the re-installation after deleting gcUnCompress.dll?

FWIW, I just had the following experience:

On an XP Pro machine (working via remote desktop two deep--via a Windows
2000 server.)

Build .509 was in place, and I spotted the auto-update alert from Microsoft
Antispyware. I said Yes--and it proceeded to upgrade to .614.

When the upgrade was complete and I had rebooted, I checked the
gcUnCompress.dll version and found it to be wrong--130k.

I deleted it at a command prompt.

I then performed the add/remove programs change/update routine.

Rechecked--and there was no gcUnCompress.dll in \system32. (nor anywhere
else on the system, at least as far as a dir \gcu*.dll command could see.)

So I re-did the change/update, and that fixed it.

When the .dll is completely missing, there are no clear symptoms--a run of
Microsoft Antispyware Update apparently proceeded normally, as did File,
Check for updates.

I don't know how anomalous this experience was, but checking for the correct
..dll after the update may be worth doing.

Boggle! Maybe the MSAS installer is more broken than I had imagined
possible.

B

Bill Sanderson

I was quite startled. I was working via Remote Desktop, 2 deep, and the
host (target) machine was a laptop with a larger display, so I was scrolling
around.

However, there are only about 4 clicks to the change/update process, and it
sure appeared to go normally to me--both times!

I'm going to retract. When I got back to that server, I noticed a Microsoft
Antispyware icon on the desktop. I normally blow those away whenever I see
them.

So--my conclusion is that I first did a change/update on the server,
followed by one on the workstation--confused by the nested nature of two RD
sessions.

Maybe the installer isn't quite so bad.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I have now tried (three more times) after disabling my
antivirus software and firewall and still have the wrong
version of gcUnCompress.dll. After deleting the
gcUnCompress.dll, I refreshed the folder view and it
wasn't there - and there are several versions now in my
recycle bin. I must be doing something wrongly!!
