new sofware recognizing old software

I am trying to install a newer version of software to run a different machine
here at work. I keep running into the problem of the new software
recognizing parts of the old software and it won't continue with
installation. The company suggests that there are registry files from the
old software embedded in my hard drive, but couldn't really help any more. I
did a search for files named "7000" (the old software), but there are many
that come up. One in particular comes up in C:\I386\ASMS\7000. Is this a
microsoft file, or is there a chance this is part of my old 7000 software.

Any other suggestions for where to find "registry files" from installed (or
deleted) software???

thanks,

Re: the second part with registry. I wouldn't manually delete entries in the
registry. You should use a good registry cleaner like Registry First-Aid.
Registry Medic, or the one that comes with Fix-It Utilities (the best).
They'll find all the invalid paths, orphans, etc. and let you remove them
safely.
