new server: client still sees itself offline from old server

small home network: had to replace old server that died with new server.

client is a laptop that uses offline files. client still sees itself as
offline from old server. client connects fine to new server but
synchronization always gives choice of both old and new servers.

both old and new server are xp home
client is xp pro

just want to clean things up and do away with all references to old server.
