Offline files XP Pro and Windows 2008 server

We have about 70 laptop users and their My Documents folder is redirected to
server so there is always backup and that file is working offline.

With few users we have problems all the time. Offline files won't
synchronize somehow. When going completely offline you can get the file
visible, and you can move it from my documents and synchronize will work
again after that.

What could cause this problem. It seems to happen more often with users who
are away a lot. And when they are out of office they use vpn connection to
site daily.

I'd start by checking the event logs on those workstations.
