New serial-ata 300 GB hard drive

I'm running win xp home OEM and I recently installed a new Maxtor serial-ata
300 GB hard drive. That's when the problems started. After I partitioned it
and formatted the partitions with NFTS filesystem, I tried to move some data
over to the new hard drive. Then I suddenly got a blue screen, the computer
restarted and I got a Blue screen at every boot from then;

c000006 Unmountable_boot_volume.

I tried everything, the only thing that worked was formatting c: and doing a
clean install with win xp pro.

Could anyone tell me how to keep this from happening again? I don't dare
using the new drive until the initial problem is solved!!

Have you looked at Maxtor website for disk diagnostic utilities?

If they don't supply utilities (Maxtor I mean) do you want to keep the
drive?

I bet there are utilities (I hope there are ... )

Have you installed the SATA driver for the new drive and have you made sure
your bios has been set to support the drive. SATA is usually not as straight
forward to setup as PATA drives, which basicly need no configuration.

Hi,

My old drive is a Maxtor Sata 200 GB and it has worked fine for one year. So
I thought my system was ready for it. Where do I find drivers for the sata
drive?

The same place that utilities should also be present (IMO)

Also, if you bought a retail drive, there should be an installation CD which
also contains diagnostic software. If you bought an OEM drive, then you are
supposed to realize that you need the diagnostic software.

Of course they do! Utilities and support diagnostics I mean (I thought
they would)

Long URL warning:

http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor
/menuitem.8db0c3d6932ced37294198b091346068/
?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads

but you can find it from Maxtor's homepage.

In futute you may find it helpful to check out these details BEFORE
commiting an upgrade and AFTER doing a full backup of data and BURNING
any downloaded executables to some sort of safe archival storage (CD or DVD)
