New screensavers options with regedit

S

Susan

I recently downloaded 4 of the windows vista screensavers that can also be
used for windows xp. They work just fine but I can't make any options
adjustments. I downloaded the screensavers
(http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Vista-Screensaver-Ported-to-XP-Download-44716.html
) along with some setting adjustments that can be made in regedit, but I
have no idea exactly how to make the adjustments. Plus I don't want to mess
up what is in there already. I'm not too familiar with regedit and I know
I'd pretty much need a "Dummies for ..." set of instructions

These are the instructions that came along with the screensaver:

Path: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Screensavers\Aurora

- NumLayers [DWORD] int
Self explanatory

- Brightness [DWORD] int
Self explanatory

- Speed [DWORD] int
Self explanatory

- SpanMultiMon [DWORD] 0/1
Enable/Disable spanning across multiple monitors
(one set of configuration data)

- Amplitude [DWORD] int
Self explanatory

- AllScreensSame [DWORD] 0/1
Enable/Disable the matching of ribbon displays on all
monitors

I don't have to have the options, the screensavers work just fine as they
are but I would like to tweak them if I can. Can anyone help?

Thanks

You wanna know what I really think?

1- Stay away from things you don't understand. The Windows registry is
no place for proverbial 'dummies'.

2- Downloaded screen savers often contain additional software that you
don't want.

You are right, I'll leave the settings alone in the screensavers. But the
screensavers themselves are from Microsoft and so far I haven't seen or
detected anything additional beyond program itself.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you for the link, I looked at it, but I'm a bit too nervous to mess
around with it, so I'm just going to leave the screensavers as is. I will
keep checking online though, maybe Microsoft will fix it to where the ones I
mentioned will be changed so Windows XP users can change the settings.

Thanks again,

This site has helpful info on the use of regedit.

The screensavers themselves are /not/ from Microsoft.

I'm not arguing the point, but I think these 4 screensavers, Aurora,
Bubbles, Mystify and Ribbons are indeed from Microsoft. I right clicked on
Aurora and it gave Microsoft Corporation as the copyrighted owner. That is
just what the program property says.

What do you base that belief on?

Maybe the original *for-Vista* screen savers are from Microsoft, but these
are ports to XP. There's no mention of MS on that page. Indeed, if you click
on "read more" you get to
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Screensavers/Vista-Screensaver-Ported-to-XP.shtml
where it states, under "Developer", the names "joejoe & Rafael". I didn't
get any further than that in finding out any more info about them as you end
up in a "softpedia" loop of pages. But no mention of these screensavers
being from Microsoft.

I read all these .... But none suit my question...

blah blah - Have you figured out where there at and if they're safe.

thanx
