NEW SATA drive...OEM...no INSTALL disks! WHAT DO I DO?!

G

Guest

I had a problem, so I purchased a new hard drive:

Western Digital SATA 320 GB hard drive.

I previously had 250 GB hard drive installed (set as MASTER), but was not
booting, and I was told by this newsgroup to reformat the drive. To prevent
data loss, I've purchased a new hard drive.

I also have a 200 GB hard drive as well (set as SLAVE).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's information on my computer:

System:

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Computer:

AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+
2.09 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

I use nVidia chipsets.
I have the ABIT NF7-S motherboard.
I use 2 IDE hard drives (150GB and 250GB)
Single partition in the NTFS format.
I have an ATI ALL IN WONDER 9700 PRO (graphics card)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
My question is this.......do I need Western Digital installation disks to
setup my new SATA hard drive with my mother board? I puchased my new SATA
hard drive from eBay, and it's an OEM, so it came with NOTHING but the hard
drive. I already purchased the SATA cable and power cable and everything is
plugged into place. I unplugged my 2 other hard drives (because they aren't
even working properly, but I have all my data on them). I started up the
computer and it reads.....

******
Verifying DMI Pool Data............
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
******

Does this have to do with the boot settings? I have the Windows XP Pro
install CD in the CD drive? Do I need to set it to boot from CD-rom/DVD-rom
first?

Most importantly.....what can I do about installing the hard drive into my
system? I don't have an installation disk (called Data Lifeguard Tools) or
something.

I found these links.....do i have to download anything and create a boot cd?

I got into BIOS and went to STANDARD CMOS FEATURES.......it has IDE Primary
Master/Slave and IDE Secondary Master/Slave.

NO SATA OPTIONS. So do I need to install SATA into my BIOS? How can I do
this without an INSTALL CD?!

Thanks,
Mike

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware

I don't quite get what you're talking about for STEP 4. I set my computer to
BOOT from CD-ROM in BIOS, but it still didn't work. I remembered I had this
problem last time and had to create 6 WIN XP PRO w/ Service Pack 2 Bootup
floppy disks......i am installing those as we speak.

When exactly will STEP 4 come up, and what is the significance of STEP 4?

Thanks,
Mike

After I did the 6 BOOTUP disks......it's telling me that it cannot find a
CR-ROM drive. It reads:

"Setup cannot find a CD-ROM drive

Make sure your CD-ROM drive is on and properly connected to your computer. If
it is a SCSA CD-ROM drive, make sure your SCSI devices are properly
terminated. See your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more
information.

Setup cannot continue, To quit Setup, press F3."

OK, i have that problem solved. My IDE Cable for the CD-ROm drive was loose.
I pressed F6 (during the set up and tell it to find the drivers on the disk)
when the Windows XP install cd was starting, and chose S.........now it says

"Please insert the disk labeled
Manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk
into drive A:
*Press ENTER when ready."

Do I even need to be doing this? Or will my installation of Windows XP Pro
take care of all of this?

If I DO need to do the F6, S thing........what can I do about the fact that
my hard drive was purchased as an OEM, with no installation disks or ANYTHING
at all? Can I download something from a website, put it on a floppy and stick
it in?

THANKS!

Since you obviously have access to the internet why not go to the

I tried just installing Windows and this message eventually came up:

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly ocnnected to your
computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This
may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, Press F3."

It's a Western Digital 320 GB SATA hard drive. I'm not sure exactly what I
need to download.

Sounds like you may have multiple problems. But, here are some thoughts
about SATA, based on my own usage thereof:

1. Many SATA controller are also RAID controllers. This is the case for my
ASUS P4S8X motherboard. This is separate from the BIOS, in fact the RAID
controller has its own mini-BIOS, of sorts. During the power on testing
(black screen with white printing), after the RAM check, look for something
about a Fastrack controller or similar. I my case I hit CTRL-F6 to enter
the RAID setup. By default, my motherboard wants to combine two disks to
make one big and faster disk, or to mirror the disks for redundacy. I had
to use the custom options to make each disk a RAID arrray be itself. Before
the RAID array was made, nothing saw the disks, not the XP CD, not a boot
floppy, not the tools from Seagate (my disk manufacturer). After I built
the RAID, the disks appeared as RAW (unformated) to XP and to the Seagate
Tools. The DOS floppy could not see them since they had neither partitions
nor formats. But, once they had FAT32 fomat, the floppy saw them via the
good old DIR command.

2. Assuming that you have a RAID controller, and set of the RAID correctly
(even if that means a stand-alone disk), then I would download and use the
WD tools to (a) test the disk, (b) partition, (c) format. I agree that the
XP CD should be able to do this, but I found the Seagate tools very
friendly, and besides, I wanted FAT32 partitions > 32 Gig, which the XP CD
will refuse to make. I assume that WD has equally good software.

3. If the XP CD does not boot, it is likely that (a) the BIOS settings (not
RAID controller) are incorrect. In theory you should be able to boot from
that CD with no hard drives attached. I am talking about a real XP CD, not
a recovery CD from a PC maker like Dell or Gateway. (b) But, it is also
possible that the XP CD detects a prior installation of XP and due to some
corruption of files on the old installation is getting confused. If you
pull the signal cable form all internal disks, except for the new SATA disk,
then there can be no confusion. (c) XP prior to SP-1 had trouble with disks
127 Gig. I hope that your CD is SP-1 or better SP-2. If not, you may
need to do some research on exactly how to intall XP, then later get XP to
recognize the full disk size. I have heard that the key is 48-LBA must be
enabled, but I have not actually worked with disks of that size.

4. As for booting form a CD in general, that is controlled from the BOOT
tab of the BIOS setup. The number "1" item must be something like ATAPI
CD-ROM. My BIOS setup says that on the left and [IDE DVD-ROM 16X] to the
right of it, since I have a 16X DVD. If I had multiple CD/DVD hardware, I
would have a pick list from which to choose. However, if you begin to doubt
the ability to boot the PC from a CD, try an alterantive bootable CD, like
Norton Antivirus, or Utilities, or SystemWorks.

|
|
|
| If I DO need to do the F6, S thing........what can I do about the fact that
| my hard drive was purchased as an OEM, with no installation disks or ANYTHING
| at all? Can I download something from a website, put it on a floppy and stick
| it in?
|
| THANKS!

This is exactly why I won't purchase SATA drives - they're
not (yet) supported in the BIOS, and there are few if any
performance benefits. The big thing you hear is about
better airflow within the case because the SATA cables are
so small. It's laughable.

I got into BIOS and went to STANDARD CMOS
FEATURES.......it has IDE Primary

I have a motherboard with BIOS that supports SATA -
Intel D915GAG. I just assembled a system last week
using this board and a SATA drive.

I turned on the power, popped in an XP SP2 CD, and the install proceeded
flawlessly. In less that two hours I went from having a pile of components
to watching a DVD.

Western Digital wouldn't have much to do with it. They have some utilities
available for download from their web site (www.wdc.com), but you need
drivers. The drivers that would be from Abit (www.abit-usa.com,
www.abit.com.tw). If you don't have a manual for the board, you can download
a copy of it:

http://www.abit-usa.com/downloads/d...tw/pub/download/manual/english/nf7_series.pdf

In particular, there are BIOS settings for the SATA controller that have to
be right if you wish to boot from it.

I believe that the drivers you need for the Silicon Image controller are:

http://file.abit.com.tw/pub/download/drivers/sata/silicon/3112a/1.0.0.47/si3112_10047.exe

(It's a self-extracting archive. Run it in an otherwise empty folder, and
follow the instructions in the README.) Some SATA controllers use different
drivers depending on whether they are being used as ordinary drivers or in a
RAID pair, but I don't see any separate non-RAID drivers for your SI 3112
controller.

Good luck.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I'm STILL HAVING PROBLEMS........this is so frustrating :-(.........

I have a Data Lifeguard Tools CD that came with my last Western Digital
retail drive that I bought. I used that and created partitions for my new
drive. My new drive was detected with the Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD.

Also, my hard drive description WD 3200JD shows up when my computer loads as
the Primary Drive.............then says the Secondary Drive could not be
found.

There is NO DETECTION of my SATA hard drive whatsoever in BIOS. There is an
option to do an AutoSearch, but nothing is detected (i assume it's because
it's searching the IDE and not SATA). I have no clue what to do anymore.

I even had the option to make bootable disks of the Data Lifeguard Tools CD
from Western Digital and made those........then tried using them from the F6
and S options before Windows loads. They said:
"the file txtsetup.oem could not be found"
(for the bootable diskettes).

Before this (after I partitioned the drive) I tried to install Win XP Pro
normally, then when it seems ready after loading everything, it tells me that
the hard disk is not detected...........

-------------
"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly ocnnected to your
computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This
may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, Press F3."
------------

so no luck there! how can i get BIOS or whatever is causing setup not to
detect the hard drive to DETECT it and INSTALL???!!!!

I also entered the RAID utility and chose to format the new hard drive. It
said all data would be lost. Does this mean i have to repartition the drive
again?

I'M SO CONFUSED, AGGRAVATED, FRUSTRATED, WORRIED...........

and on top of all this I'm a college kid with HOMEWORK!

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!

The link for the drivers didn't really help when I opened it on the current
computer I'm using. I have an ABIT CD with drivers on it.......think that
might solve the problem?

I ALSO HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM.......
when trying to boot from the ABIT CD (and this happened other times as
well).......I get the message:

"Verifying DMI Pool Data........
Boot from ATI-PC CD-ROM
NTLDR is missing"

I just don't know what to do anymore. Every time I seem to make
progress.......another roadblock ends up in front of me, causing detour after
detour. :-(

ANY MORE IDEAS????

I was referred to the SI 3112 driver.......that is a driver available on my
ABIT CD.....however, I don't know how to get it onto a BOOTABLE DISKETTE. I
have no clue how to do those from downloading from anywhere, and exactly what
files can or need to go onto a bootable diskette.

Drag and drop or cut an paste. If you are saying you don't know how to make
a boot floppy after downloading the image, just click on the file and follow
the prompts.
You will need a blank floppy disk or one you don't mind formatting. Place it
in the floppy drive before clicking the disk image. There are links in the
web page listed below.

it's a MIRACLE! I think I got it. I ended up dragging some files from my ABIT
CD with the SATA RAID drivers. I kind of guessed which files I needed to drag
into the floppy drive. I did it with 2 different folders!

WHen SETUP began I pushed F6, then S......and inserted the FLOPPY!
VOILA....I was able to select an SCSI Adater for

"Silicon Image SiI 3x12 SATARAid Controller for Windows XP"

I pushed ENTER.......and I can't explain the feeling I got when the USER
AGREEMENT FORM FLASHED ON MY SCREEN!

I set up 3 partitions earlier for my hard drive, and I'm currently
formatting the first partition. I'll keep you all updated!

AFTER 7 hours of intense work............I finally did it! THANK YOU TO
EVERYONE FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP! Words cannot express my gratitude! I'll post a
followup to let you know my progress when I finish!

Peace,
Mike
