New program installations show up in Start Menu for All Users

GregandMary

Hi,

When I install a new program in Win2000, it shows up under the Start
Menu for All Users, which is fine since I am the only user on my
computer. The problem is that it DOESN"T show up under the
Administrator folder which is located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu

When I install a new program, I want it to show up under this
Administrator folder listed above. It used to do this automatically
before I reinstalled Win2000. How can I get this working correctly
again? I always log in as the administrator. There are no other users
registered on my computer. There is only "Administrator" and "All
Users".

Thanks,
Greg

The location of shortcuts depends entirely on the installation
program for the specific application. I have seen all of the
following scenarios:
a) In the "All Users" profile folder.
b) In the current user's profile folder.
c) It asks you where it should put the icons.

I think c) is the best option and b) the worst.

This is solely up to the application developer. There is no global operating
system setting that controls this.

I suppose you are probably right, but I never had this problem before I
reinstalled Win2000. Whenever I installed a program in the past, I
could then right-click on the Start Menu and choose Explore (Not
"Explore All users"), and the program would show up there. Always!
But now it only shows up if I explore all users.

Well, it's just a bit of a pain, that's all. But if there is no
solution, then there is no solution!

Thanks for your help,
Gregandmary

The solution is easy: Move your shortcuts from your personal
profile folder to the "All Users" Profile folder!

Or the other way around. :)

Nice to see that there is someone out there who checks
my replies so that I don't write too much rubbish!

It works as you say, but it ain't exactly "easy" that way. Each time I
install a new program, I have to drill into the various folders to
mix-and-match. It's a bit of a pain actually. But I guess you could
say it "works" lol.
