New PC wVista Home & Security Software

I
am a novice with a new computer and vista premium.

I want to know, if I never had any other operating sysstem or security
protection software on this computer - is windows defender and firewall along
with my ICP provider security sufficent protection. Should one consider
paying for another full packaged security software and install on their PC?

Currently, a trial version of Mcafee is installed on my computer. I have
downloaded a free version of AVG antivirus. I have also, checked into Panda
products?

Can someone give me some direction?

Since Vista hasn't been in the wild for too long, none of us in the tech
business know exactly how vulnerable it will be. I believe that if you
use the built-in Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and a good
antivirus you will be fine as long as you practice "Safe Hex" (see links
below). I recommend Kaspersky, NOD32, or Avast (if you want free). NOD32
is my current favorite. I absolutely do *not* recommend McAfee or
Norton. I've never liked Panda.

Why don't you like Norton?

I'm not the one who made the comments, but I have not used Norton since they
were bought out by Symantec.
After which, their software became very bloated imo.
For anti virus I now use AVG.
I first used their free product but have since upgraded to the anti malware
package which is anti virus/spyware.

I used to find it bloated, but since i was given NIS 2007 form my BT option
3 it is really slimmed down and I have been surprised by it.

You need to have an Anti-Virus program with that. I don't recommend the
security suites such as McAfee or Norton. For AV there is Avast (free), AVG
(free) and NOD32 (paid). I currently use Avast and find it to be low on
resources, and not problematic. NOD32 is excellent.

I have found this to be more a problem with the internet provided. My Mcafee

The following (if you're interested) is what I'm running.

Dual Core 2 E6600 (2.4GHZ)
2GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667 MHZ
ATI Radeon X1300 PRO 256 MB
Mcafee 36 month subscription

I have tried to download Avast - twice. It causes problem with the internet
exploreer browser. It can not find web pages.

What would you do?

What do you mean that Avast is low on resources?

Sorry I don't know why you're having a problem. Runs fine here. Have you
downloaded the version that's compatible with Vista?

By low on resources it means it doesn't use much memory and CPU time when
running. It doesn't install a large number of running processes.

Note: The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are
availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be
sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the
updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then
disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then
install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs
before reconnecting to the net.
