New network device installed

Have completed a system recovery on a notebook running XP-
HE - about the 10th time I turned it on or rebooted (while
making sure it is correctly installed), and without adding
any hardware or software, the information balloon came on
saying "New network device installed. Windows has detected
the installation of a new networking device. If you want
to start up a network, click here to run the Network Setup
Wizard." I have not installed a new network device. Last
System recovery (have been having ongoing booting
problems), this message also popped up, but in trying to
correct my problems, I'm wondering if there is something I
need to do or fix so this "networking" issue is not there.
The computer is not networked at all.

Probably related to this, when I hover over one of the
incons in the systray, it says "Local Area Connection - A
network cable is uninstalled." Again, this is not ona
network -- possibly it's a holdover from its prior
incarnation (which according to the diagnostyics run last
night, appears to have been a W2K). How can I eliminate
this network problem it thinks it sees?

Try going Contol Panel/Network Connection- Open it and
click on the connection with the X and remove it. Hope
this works for you.
