hi all,
thanks for your feedback in advance.
is there a new msblaster like worm out?
in the last three days i have been approached by three
individuals describing behaviors that sound like the
msblaster. one of the machines was bought new from a
local chain store. the other two machines i bought and
know i put in the fixes for the msblaster worm.
any ideas?
thanks again

Hi Chris,

There are always variants to a bug, and blaster is no exception. Plus, you
can't protect people from themselves. I'm betting that the ones you fixed
went right back online without a firewall. The one with a new system
probably did the same thing.

Symantec lists 7 variants of blaster. There may be more.

OEMs (including stupid Dell) are still delivering systems without even
SP1 installed, which is required for the security patches, so they are
un-patched, too. Also, many people think they are ok by merely
installing the patches but if the machine had not been firewalled and/or
patched prior to connecting to the `net they almost undoubtedly have
been hit by blaster or welchia as these worms are still circulating
quickly. Takes less than 5 minutes unprotected on the `net to get
infected. So they patch and think, ok I'm good, but they are already
infected.

If you connect via broadband, I have seen computers get infected in about a
second (-:
