New Motherboard/ original hard drive

Tom

Hi List,

I recently purchased a new motherboard and parts with the exception of the
hard drives, I just moved over the existing hard drives but it will not boot
from it. It just keeps recycling, I can get into the F8 area but each safe
boot type fails so I can't load the chipset software that came with the
mother board.

I did reload XP into a different directory named C:\WIN and all is running
fine. I created a dual boot menu to the original C:\windows and would like
to try and fix the original boot.. Because I have access to the registry in
C:\windows I was hoping to fix this boot by making the registry identify the
correct ide controller boot information that currently works from the C:\WIN
boot.

My question: Is there one place in the registry that references the ide
controller boot drivers and configuration. I was hoping to find this section
and import it into the C:\Windows registry?

Am I on the wrong track?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

You should simply have done a Repair Install. Here is a link explaining
that:

As far as I know, you'll have to do a repair install as others have stated.

In the good old days (NT4), you could simply copy the new disk
controller driver over top of the old one and the system would boot.
Even extreme hardware changes, like moving an IDE-based install to a
SCSI RAID controller, would work. It doesn't work starting with W2K.

Perhaps there's a way to trick XP into using the new driver (short of
repair install), but I haven't come across the recipe if so - despite
considerable googling and experimentation.
