New motherboard and AMD Athlon CPU

I just upgraded my computer with a new Asus A8n-SLI Deluxe motherboard and
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ CPU. I then used my original Windows XP Pro CD to
"repair" the operating system. Now, when I attempt to boot without the XP Pro
CD, I get an "OS error" message and the machine won't complete the boot cycle
(it just hangs). But, if I have the XP Pro CD in the machine, it boots fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this??

On a related point, now that I'm running the Athlon 64, do I have to upgrade
to XP 64 to take full advantage of the new CPU??

Thanks!

Run the repair installation again. That should take care of the boot
problem.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition will certainly make your machine run
faster, but since there are very few 64 bit Windows apps out right now, the
majority of apps will be 32 bit and will not run much faster under either
Windows32 or Windows 64. You have to wait until the software catches up to
take full advantage of the CPU. There are a few 64 bit games (Far Cry,
etc), and they will definitely run better and faster under x64.

You may want to consider downloading the 120 day trial version of Windows
x64 and dual booting to see if you like it. Just make sure you have all the
64 bit drivers for your motherboard, the AMD processor, video card, NIC,
etc.
