new mobo and XP, please help

B

Bill C.

My childrens computer (Compaq with WinXP home) had a
motherboard problem, so I bought a new mobo processer
combo and reused the hard drive,memory,cd-rw,and floppy
drive. After putting it all together and starting up, POST
went fine and all devices found. But I got a message
saying 'operating system not found'. I used a windows boot
disk and was able to run command.com. Then I ran chkdsk /r
and tried to reboot. This time I got an error saying 'cant
load operating system'. I was wanting to use the hard
drive as it was (not reformat) to keep all programs and
settings. Can someone please help. If you have a idea,
please email me.

Thanks, Bill C

sounds like you have the hard drive on the wrong IDE channel...double check
which channel is IDE 1 as well as doulbe check your jumper settings on hard
drive and CD rom if on the same cable (hard drive should be master and CD
should be slave)...good luck

You'll probably need to do a repair install. If the copy of XP on the
machine came from Compaq, you're pretty much out of luck with that, as it
likely won't work on the new motherboard. On the other hand, if it was a
retail version of XP, you'll be fine.

Posting tip, when you want to post the same post to multiple newsgroups,
list the newsgroups on the newsgroups input line separated by a simi-colon
[;] example below. Usenet protocol suggests no more than three [3] related
groups cross posted at a time.
microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers; microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync

HP/Compaq BIOS-lock their installations. This means that the installation
will look for a code in the BIOS and try to match it to an identical code on
the installation CD. If either is missing then the installation will fail.
Your only choice in this situation is to purchase the full version of XP
(unless you have a retail version of 9x/ME to use as a qualifying product
(95 will only work as a qualifying product for a clean installation).
