New Microsoft update causes problems

I have Windows 2000. The most recent update has caused my
computer not to go into standby mode. The power settings
are still the same as before. There is nothing running in
the task manager. Two questions:

1)How do I get the computer to resume going into standby
mode?

2) Everytime I download the MS updates I have some type of
problem. Is it really worth it to keep downloading these
updates?

Your last question is very interesting. Critical updates are just
that...critical to Windows security. And, if you read e-mail or browse
the WWW, you should be interested in Windows security. MS is moving in
the direction of pushing Automatic Updates, but I wonder the same thing
since I see updates that break installations way too often. I tend to
watch the NG's before applying a fix. The rule of thumb is to read the
KB and/or Security Alert. Determine if it applies to you. If it can
wait till the next SP, that is preferred. But if it applies to you, you
should back up your system and install the hotfix.
