"New Message" gives "The page cannot be found" error

Thanks for any help you may give.

Going to Tools > Mail and News > New Message ... opens a window which
displays "The page cannot be found". This same scenario also occurs when
clicking on a link in a web page that is suppose to redirect you to a new
window where you can enter an e-mail message.

This error only just began happening recently, erratically at first but now
consistently. I have run Norton Anti-Virus and IE repair. IE version is
6.0.2800.1106IC. I even tried Mozilla and got the same results. As far as I
know I have no popup blocker running. (Going to other sites, CareerBuilder
for example, causes popups to occur.)

What should be done? And again, thanks!

Do you have the mail program from Yahoo Instant Messenger installed? What is
under your IE > Tools > Options > Programs > Email? While you're in there
you can try pressing the reset web settings button too.

Windows version?

Default Mail Client (e.g., Outlook Express)?

What happened when it was working? What web-page would open (e.g., Yahoo,
Hotmail)?

Thanks for responding PA Bear.

Running Windows 98 with Hotmail the default e-mail client. When it was
working, I would go to the menu (Tools>Mail and News>New Message ...) and a
new window would open with a pop-up requesting the e-mail user/password
combination. Upon entry, the window would finish opening to the Hotmail>Send
New Message screen, where one would enter the body of the e-mail. (Often the
adressee and subject were pre-filled.)

I'm going to try Galen's suggestion and see how that goes. And thank you
again!!

Thank your for responding Galen!

I use Hotmail, which is the default under IE > Tools > Options > Programs >
Email.

I did click the Reset button, and lo and behold, that did the trick. I'm
kind of embarrassed that that's all it took to work ... but I'm even more
grateful! I don't know what I did to trip that setting, but I'm tripping the
Light Fantastic. So THANKS!

OOPS! Spoke too soon. The fix worked once and hasn't worked since, no
matter how many times I try it. I will go to reboot and see if this has any
affect. I'll let you know. (But still thanks!)

It worked once huh? Well... That's not good... My next idea (assuming reboot
didn't do the trick though I am not sure that it would) would be quite
basic. Delete your TIF including offline content and cookies. Then try
again. Beyond that I'd also wait to see what PA Bear has to say on the
subject now that you've told him what you're using.

Don't you love a good mystery? (This is a BAD mystery! -- LOL) Rebooting
had no effect. Deleting all TIF/offline files and cookies made no
difference. "Hotmail" was not missing in IE Tools > Internet Options >
Programs > E-mail. Downloaded drivers.exe, all without impact on fixing
this glitch. How frustrating!

Win, lose, or draw. Thanks for taking a swing at this. I AM grateful. If
you have any additional ideas, I'm open to them.

I'm running Win98, but the workaround did the trick (mostly*). I'm excited.
BUT, ...

I've never modified the Registry before, and can't quite seem to grasp the
directions to make the fix permanent. Is there a resource (Registry for
Dummies? -- LOL) that would help me understand what it is I'm suppose to do?
I got to the general area of the registry, but I'm not sure if I'm expected
to make a new folder, or which folder to put the command in. Then I'm unsure
how to go about entering this new parameter into the Registry.

It's not the end of the world if I can't do the permanent fix. The
workaround seems to be working everywhere (*but when I do a File > Send in IE
6.0 = that opens a blank window and stops, thinking it's done. In a way it
is! -- LOL -- I'm thinking the permanent fix would take care of this too.)

Finally, how do you guys know all this stuff? And do you ever get tired of
dealing with us blockheads? (I should be blond! -- LOL) A most sincere
thanks for all you have done. I am grateful.

It ran/worked in Win98? Interesting.

I think you'll find the fix is permanent, Jo. Post back if not.
