new mail notification not working at outlook 2003 startup?

Hi. I am running outlook 2003 on a windows xp home sp2 computer. I have the
new mail notification sound set to windows xp notify. I have outlook setup
to automatically send/receive when it opens, every 2 minutes, and at close.
When I first open outlook, if I receive one or several messages, the sound
doesn't go. However, while I am working, if I recieve a message, I hear the
sound. Is there a reason why the new mail notification doesn't sound when I
first open outlook? Thanks for any help.

Not always hearing the sound when you first start Outlook is normal. It is
probably because so much is going on when OL is opened. But you have another
problem you can correct. The time interval for mail retrieval should not be
less than every 5-10 minutes. Two minutes does not give the servers time to
reset. Change it to the recommended 10 minutes and see if that helps.
