New Mail Icon in Icon Tray

I recently installed Outlook2003 w/ small business
contact manger. For several months all was good.
Recently the icon in the lower right icon tray indicating
I have unread mail stopped appearing.

Any suggestions about how to get it back?

Changing the status to always show seems to have fixed
the problem.
