new license for protected content?

After combining and running an mpg grouping from a newsgroup, an MS popup
says:

"You have acquired a new license for protected content." Further it prompts
me to back up my licenses.

Is this legitimate or another ploy for me to activiate something malicious?

This is Digital Right Manangement at work. If you have Media Player set to acquire licenses automatically, it will do so for protected content. Often this method, of requiring a license, is used to generate a pop-up web page to some site that hosts the type of file you downloaded. Other times, it may be used to simply track how often a particular file is downloaded and played on separate machines, as the number of licenses issued can be tracked.

Although I have yet to get licrense MP3 files, this seems to be a legit
pop-up, when using Windows Media Player (WMP). Microsoft is part of the
group which is working on licensing digital music downloads and WMP has this
feature.

For more details, check in the mediaplayer newsgroup.

However, if you arre getting this when not using WMP, then it could be
malicious? Check for spywares.

This is MS mal/spyware at work. Best option is not to use WMP.

You have DRM at work in (MS) media player, you can turn it off. It's
actually a ploy by MS to make sure you're behaving yourself in the world
according to them.

Plus many more that don't impose their view of the world onto you, if you
want media player alternatives.

This is _enabled/disabled_ in Windows Media Player > Tools > Options

LOL
Play nice Kurt--I'm back! <G>

PS--the first thing I do to WMP on a new install is disable automatic
downloading of licenses.

Me too. Then I make sure that other players I have are the defaults for
most media types.
