I performed a "new" installation (not upgrade) from
Windows Me to Windows XP Pro. with the expectation that
the XP "new" installation option would delete all
previous files from the Me operating system. However,
after the XP "new" installation, my former files appear
as "hidden" files upon invoking my hard drive. I am at a
loss as to how to interpret, or handle this. I expected
to see nothing. Otherwise everything else is running
fine. Thanks for any advice, or counsel.

My guess is, during the install, you just chose to install to the partition
and not to format it. It will take a "clean install" to get rid of the old
files. IMHO that is your best bet. Some old problems that you may not have
been aware of may come back to haunt you if you don't do the clean install.
