Friends pc was slower and slower over many years. I kept saying maybe need
to re-install os. Finally she agreed and asked me to do it. I did and also
installed av, firewall, and spyware. That was two months ago. She just
called and said that she went into IE options security block sites and
entered some porn sites, and it asked for a password. Now when she is on
line and opens IE, it asks for the password and entering it fails, so she
can not use IE at all. However msn works, I do not know what this means,
since she uses verizon dsl. So, I told her to try password with caps lock,
then she called back and said now pc will not even start windows, there is
just a "black screen with all that writing".

Any ideas how I can save this install?

Paul

PS: I wanted to cross post this, but I do not know how to do that without
pissing off people.

Check your Group Policy settings for Internet Explorer

gpedit.msc ( from Administrator Account)

User Configuration/Window Settings/Internet Explorer
Maintenance/Security/Security Zones and Content Ratings

You will see settings for the password to make security changes here.

yes, I got it started, but all internet sites require a password now and the
password she set does not work (yes, I tried cap lock).

So, how do I cancel the password thing?

I tried logging on as adm, but it still wants her password, which it will
not accept.

I set up a new user, thinking that this new user would not have the same
security restriction as the other user, well it does.

So, no internet surfing using IE, except it will go to msn.com and
megashaft.com surprise, surprise, surprise. Also, we can surf the net with
out this security issue if we use the msn browser, so much for REAL
security.

All we need to do is break that damn password thing. Please tell me how.

tks,
paul

yes and poster Evoloution54 in windows.xp.help_and_support solved it for me,
but there are now continued issues. How do I place a link here for you to
see his and my post in that group?

P

Glad to hear your CA problem was resolved. The
"windows.xp.help_and_support" newsgroup is not meant for general help with
WinXP issues, it's supposed to be for issues regarding XP's Help features.
In any case, if you are using a newsreader (like OE), you can get the link
from the post's headers - see the example below my sig - it's the "link. If you are using the web interface to these newsgroups, right click
the "In:" link at the top of the message and choose Copy shortcut. Or, I
might wander over there myself and check it out.

Thanks

Also, you just told me what the Help ng is for. I have often wondered what
specific groups are for, there are allot of strange named ngs out there.
Looking at a few posts never gives a clue.

well, that link is not too much good.
