New Install and virus

How can I setup Windows XP Pro from scratch on a computer
and patch it without getting compromised or infected by
virus?

I am trying to install Windows XP Pro on my computer
which is connected to the campus network. After the first
reboot, I went to the Windows Update site to install all
the patches. I noticed that everything was very slow so
the I checked the registry and found the Welchia virus.

Is there a how-to article to address this issue?

Thanks

Well thats not what I am asking. I will scan, clean and
format my machine before I do a fresh install.

What I am asking is this; what's the recommended way to
patch a machine with a fresh install of Windows XP? If I
connect it to the network to go to Windows Update site,
there is a possibility of getting hacked or compromised.

Funny you should mention this, we have had the same problem. On a
network that is protected with Symantec Antivirus Corporate we loaded
two Microsoft XP machines.. Only the original install cd's from the
packaging were used, no drivers were needed at all.. (And if there
are, we always run Windows Update first). After the install of all the
critical updates low and behold, Welchia on both machines.

I wouldnt have been as concerned if both machines were installed by
myself, but the second machine was installed by another tech in a
different room using a different CD.

So, my findings are pointing to the worm coming over from Windows
Update, I will know for sure today as I will be reloading one of the
machines, and loading critical updates one by one until Anti-Virus
barks.

My recommendations to all are to install your Anti-Virus ASAP after
loading, THEN install your critical updates.

Lets hope Microsoft looks into this problem soon and can offer us a
bulletproof solution.
