New Info on IRQ BSOD

Since that post, I ran pc diagnostics from Hiren's Boot Disk and came up
with "failed system stress" test. Don't know what that means. Can anyone help
with that??

I also get popups on boot:

The system has recovered from a serious error.

The following files will be included in the error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER616a.dir00\Mini120908-03.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER616a.dir00\sysdata.xml

guys monitor these posts and can explain it. Also the machine doesn't boot or
shutdown properly. Very very slow. But, once it's up it runs faster than ever
- unless it freezes up. I have other computers to use but this problem is a
bug and I hate to let it go. Anyone think of any tests I might run? I can run
diagnostics from a boot disk (UBCD, UBCD for Windows, etc.) rather than from
Windows.

Gerry, sorry for the miscommunication. I did reply and it must have gotten
screwed up somehow. What I replied to you was:

I neglected to answer all the questions in my last post. In particular,
Gerry asked about the make and model of the computer I'm using. I did list
that info at the bottom of my original post but here it is again:

Emachine T3506
Total Physical Memory: 1.5Gb
Windows XP Home SP2
3.2GHz Intel Celeron
120 Gb Hard Drive

As for Windows CDs I do not have an original for this machine.
I did make a bootable recovery disk using Bart's PE and the I 386 file from
the computer. I do have disks for Windows XP Pro. Ichecked the Device
Manager and all looks normal. I had read where this bsod had occurred with
some malware comprimised machines so just to cover all bets I ran HijackThis
and submitted the log file for analysis. The results indicated a couple of
suspicious files but nothing glaring. I also found that a heck of a lot of
the people who had this IRQ BSOD had emachines. Thanks for the other info. I
will download and run that software and I'll post back here again.

I downloaded the UPHC software and it did something - but I don't know what.
I no longer get the BSOD but perhaps that's because the machine won't
shutdown. When I shut down it hangs for a long time at the "logging off"
screen. It will eventually get to the "Windows is shutting down" screen where
it stays and I finally have to use the power button to shut it down. Also,
bootup takes an inordinately long time. I could remove the Hive Cleaner and
see if I get the BSOD again but I don't know that it will help.

Leave UPH installed.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

I downloaded the UPHC software and it did something - but I don't
know what. I no longer get the BSOD but perhaps that's because the
machine won't shutdown. When I shut down it hangs for a long time at

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

I downloaded the UPHC software and it did something - but I don't
know what. I no longer get the BSOD but perhaps that's because the
machine won't shutdown. When I shut down it hangs for a long time at
the "logging off" screen. It will eventually get to the "Windows is
shutting down" screen where it stays and I finally have to use the
power button to shut it down. Also, bootup takes an inordinately long
time. I could remove the Hive Cleaner and see if I get the BSOD again
but I don't know that it will help.

Gerry, sorry for the miscommunication. I did reply and it must have
gotten screwed up somehow. What I replied to you was:

I neglected to answer all the questions in my last post. In
particular, Gerry asked about the make and model of the computer
I'm using. I did list that info at the bottom of my original post
but here it is again:

Emachine T3506
Total Physical Memory: 1.5Gb
Windows XP Home SP2
3.2GHz Intel Celeron
120 Gb Hard Drive

As for Windows CDs I do not have an original for this machine.
I did make a bootable recovery disk using Bart's PE and the I 386
file from the computer. I do have disks for Windows XP Pro.
Ichecked the Device Manager and all looks normal. I had read where
this bsod had occurred with some malware comprimised machines so
just to cover all bets I ran HijackThis and submitted the log file
for analysis. The results indicated a couple of suspicious files
but nothing glaring. I also found that a heck of a lot of the
people who had this IRQ BSOD had emachines. Thanks for the other
info. I will download and run that software and I'll post back here
again.

to let it go. Anyone think of any tests I might run? I can run
diagnostics from a boot disk (UBCD, UBCD for Windows, etc.)
rather than from Windows.

explorer.exe. What programme is not immediately apparent. However, it
apparent from file version that Windows XP is not being updated in the
normal way. Explorer.exe should have been updated before SP3 and upon

update is having both in terms of security and the proper running of
Windows. Is there a reason for not updating?

have left the start up item in place.

A safer way than msconfig to disable / remove unwanted start up items is
to use Autoruns.

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.

Look for a reference to szkg and disable the item.
