new home network...major crisis

hey all, im having troubles connecting 2 pc together via
lan cards. one new pc running win xp pro, and the other
running win 98 v.1. the xp machine believes that it isnt
connected ( via x over ) when it is infact connected.
the card is installed correctly and the latest drivers
have also been installed. " This device is working
properly" according to xp, but quite clearly isn't.

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Are you using a crossover cable?
