NEW HARDDRIVE/BOOT PROBLEMS

G

Guest

I just bought a new harddrive from Seagate.its 100gb and i installed it into
my computer. When i boot up the computer the keyboard doesnt turn on and
doesnt work so i cant even get into the bios or setup or anything.
While it is booting, it goes into the safe mode choices/normal
startup, etc. and then i can't hit enter or choose any choices so i have to
let the timer run out. then it goes into a black, blank screen with a
blinking "_" in the upper right hand corner. and thats where it gets stuck.
Any ideas?

Specs:
Pentium 3 1ghz (compatible motherboard)
ATI Radeon 9550
512Mb RAM

Was everything working before....If so,use old set up,add new hd as slave
on IDE chain, format the drive, then set jumpers to master, install OS.You can
also,power off,remove battery,move the boards CMOS pin from 1-2 to 2-3
for 30 seconds or so,then back to 1-2 position,replace battery,start
computer.

well im not tryin to add it as a slave. i want it to be a master and the hdd
is on the default jumpers which im pretty sure is at master. but the keyboard
isnt working during start up. i think if i can get it to work i can fix
everything else.

Perhaps you need to tell us whether you cloned your origonal drive to new or
it was a new o/s install?
Is it also a retail winxp or OEM, if so who's (eg Dell)

USB Keyboard?? If so, you will need to go into bios, there may be a setting
for USB Keyboard/Legacy keyboard.

Well. its brand new. Blank from seagate. 100gb. no OS installed on it. its
retial windows xp korean version. so fresh out of the box.

Lets see if I've read this right.
1)New hd, as master
2)No o/s installed
Presumably your then booting from the winxp cd?
and find keybd isn't detected so are unable to proceed?

But then in your 1st post you said it goes into safe mode, if that is the
case you have installed win.
So what exactly have you done?

You usually enter the bios by hitting a particular key (often Del)
immediately pc switched on, allthough if it worked with origonal hd/win
installation unless you cleared cmos settings bios should not have changed,
to disable keybd.

What sort of keyboard do you have, PS2/USB or wireless. If it is not PS2 I
doubt then you install XP, I think you need a PS2 keyboard then after
installation is completed you can use your other keyboard.

i tried using both usb and ps/2 but niether of them come up. I tried
installing windows xp pro korean ver. on the hdd with a different computer
and it loaded fine. but going to this new computer the computer just goes to
the safe mode/safe mode networking/normal start up MENU. so it just keeps
loading, gets stuck and reboots.

usb/ps2 neither work. i install xp pro on the hdd on a diff computer but it
wont load up on the one i need it to.

Not sure why a PS2 keyboard doesn't work but I don't think you can use a USB
keyboard to install windows because USB devices aren't detected until
windows is running.
You can't load onto a different machine and then transfer it to the new one
without carrying out a repair install/inplace upgrade, read through this see
if it helps

You've still got to explain how you cannot install win yet the sys boots
into safe mode.
The two statements are incompatible

well if u read the other post. i said that i installed windows onto the HDD
but on a DIFFERENT computer. so windows is on it but it wont load. then the
keyboard doesnt work so all i can do is go into bios. it doesnt actually go
into safe mode. it goes into that menu where u can choose between safe mode
safe mode w/ networking, safe mode with command prompt and the normal start
up.
i would do a repair or reformat but i cant even cuz when i get it to run
cd-rom first, and the the "Press any key to boot from CD" i cant hit any key
to start it. so it just keeps resetting and is STUCK.

Presumably you have known working keybd?
Try clearing the cmos, on the mobo

If on booting and constantly hitting the Del key, or whichever key allows
you to enter the bios, doesnt result in the bios screen then it would seem
you have either defective hw or keybd connection

i can get into bios, i can move around in bios. i set the cd-rom as first to
boot. but once i put in the xp cd and reboot. i get the "HIt any key to boot
form CD" and ther ei am stuck because the keyboard isnt working. and i tried
to use a seagate cd for new hdd setup stuff. and keyboard doesnt work with
that either.
