Hello,

I am wanting to replace my hard drive. Reason, I installed full version of Windows XP Home and it did NOT remove Windows 98. When I boot my computer it displays a DOS screen and ask's me; What OS do I want to start with?? With two chose's; Windows 98 or WinXP. Plus my computer always starts with the big red COMPAQ on the screen. And after the install of WinXP this Compaq screen should have went Bye Bye. So I am thinking that somewhere on the hard drive, behind some type of partition, Compaq has put Windows 98 with their bg red COMPAQ and the average guy can not get to it. Plus I only have a 20 G hard drive and now they have out 120 G hard drives. So I am using this as a excuse to have to buy a new hard drive.

So to my question. Can you just install a new hard drive and put in WinXP into the CD rom drive and re-boot your computer and Win XP will install itself and with any amount of luck your computer will run??????? Is it just this simple ?????

Thank you everyone !!!!!!!

Russell,
that is correct, after you install your HDD, go into BIOS
and set first boot to cd, when you boot up you should see
windows xp starting to install, follow on screen
instructions and format hdd in NTFS, up to you if you
wish to add partitions, I never do, prefer to have 2 60s
to 1 120, but I am sure there is someone out there who
can give advice on the best us of a large HDD.
good luck

Yes. But, make sure that the System Setup (BIOS) is set to make the CD
drive the first drive in the booting sequence. Also, if you have hardware
that doesn't have native drivers on the Windows XP CD, you'll have to
download and install those drivers.

Perhaps, your old HD has 2 partitions, one now has XP and the other has Windows 98 customed by Compaq, thus the logos still. This feature does allow you to play games and use 98 SW not compatible with XP. Am I right? Each partition will have it's own drive designation along with the other drives, e.g., C, D, E, F, G, etc. If you do not find more than one partition, please disregard this note

To install a new hard drive, you will need a bunch of files -- all of the drivers for the hardware on your computer. XP will bring along some, most often not all, especially if you have scanners, printers of the previous period. Basically, install the HD making sure that the jumper is set to "master." Use your Startup floppy (make it before you remove the original HD.) to partition and then format the HD. (You can make 2 partitions and put 98 on one of them, if you like.) Load XP on C:\ and hope that all necessary drivers are present. If not, then find them on the net or from Compaq.

You might keep the old HD in it's place and install the second. Run both. If you choose to do this, set the jumpers on the old one to "slave." It would be wise to check with the mfg. before you proceed. Each and every mfg. has it's own bag of snakes -- chip set files, drivers, etc. Q: do you have enough memory and processor speed

Hope this gives you a safe start
