I am replacing a hard drive (slave) on a Win XP Home
machine. POST recognises the drive and Properties show it
working properly, but Disk management module gives volume
status Not Initialized and the wizard won't run - right
click does not show Initialize (only New Partition greyed
out).

Can anyone help please?

Go back into disk Management, and create a Primary
partition on the new drive, then format it.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management >

Here you will have to partition and format and assign a drive letter.
See help for more explicit information.

I can't create primary partition as the option is greyed out on menu. Disk is
a DiamondMax Plus 8 40 GB, and it passes all Maxtor's diagnostic software
tests.

Have you tried using Maxtor SW to partition and format the drive? I believe
they have this on their site as well.

FWIW, Len
