can't add old hard drive to XP

P

PG

Here is a rundown on what I have done.

Motherboard on old Windows Me computer went bad.
Computer would not boot
Decided to just buy a new computer
I need to get files off old Windows Me hard drive
Take Windows Me hard drive out
Set Jumper on hard drive is set as a slave
Connect old windows ME hard drive to new computer running
XP Home Edition
Start up computer
Detects new hardware
Hard drive does not show up in Explorer
Go to Settings=>Control Panel=>Administrative
Tools=>Computer Management
Storage=>Disk Management
Under the Disk Management the hard drive shows up as 2
partitions

Here are values for the 2 partitions:
Volume= Blank
Layout= Partition
Type= Basic
File System= FAT32
Status= Healthy(Active)
Capacity= 38.27GB
Free Space= 25.84GB
% Free= 67%
Fault Tolerance=No
Overhead= 0%

Volume= Blank
Layout= Partition
Type= Basic
File System= NTFS
Status= Healthy(EISA Configuration)
Capacity= 6.01GB
Free Space= 2.09GB
% Free= 34%
Fault Tolerance=No
Overhead= 0%

Only option when I right click on the partition to add
is "Delete Partition"
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong or what I need to do
to see this old hard drive?

It should be seen and function as a slave. Have you opened
the BIOS and made sure that both IDE are set to automatic?

Hey, I'mhaving the same problem with a 80gb right now.
I've moved it to a new computer once before and it worked
fine. I've checked the BIOS and it's set on automatic
detection and i've called Western Digital and they said
to try Microsoft. I really need what's on the 80gb.
Please help.

I have checked the BIOS and the BIOS recognizes the
drive as a slave and all the options for the drive are
set to AUTO.

Try changing the pins to cable select (CS).

There are a number of reasons why you might not be able to see th
drive. One of those being NTFS security on the old drive. Try loggin
on to the system as the same user of the old computer. Long stor
short, if you send me the drives I can copy your files for you

Regards,
Bo
