I have just replaced a hard drive on a computer that was running XP
home . The new hard drive was installed , formatted (no partition) then
XPpro Media centre edition was installed,.....Successfully
At this point I thought it wise to add my motherboard drivers ......
BUT they will not load (tried about 10 times).
I'm not sure, but have I done this in the wrong sequence ??? Should I
have installed or opened BIOS system first ???

So where did I go wrong ..... New Hard Drive ,.... New Install of XP
pro MCE , that boots up OK , ..... BUT I cannot add M/b
drivers........ HELP

Sounds like you've done right to me. Just go online and download new drivers
from the motherboard manufacturers website. If you want we can help just let
us know what Motherboard you have. ie: make and model. Good Luck

Thanks for the reassurance , I thought I might be on the right track
and had already started to do as you suggest. ( burning upgrades to CD
)
Do I have to alter Bios at any stage??? I'm not very familar with the
blue screen menu and would rather not dive in blindly...!!!

hotshod.

You should not have to modify the motherboard settings in the BIOS in
order to install updated drivers. You will probably have to
reconfigure the BIOS setup if you install a Motherboard BIOS update.
However unless there is a specific reason for doing so (e.g. the BIOS
update fixes a problem that you have been encountering or improves
performance in some significant way) then there is probably no need to
do a BIOS update.

Good luck

Thanks Ron ,
Still a bit confused .......
Originally the M/board drivers would not load from original disc (
would load 40%, then stop with a "Not Responding ").

So if I download new drivers ,from web and install from CD , for M/b
would this not be the equivalant of an update, thus needing Bios
reconfig..???

Another question if may......
When I loaded XP .... I had a multi card reader and 2 DVD drives on the
machine and that meant my local disc drive became ( I: ) instead of (
C: )..... can I change this from the repair option at the start of XP
instal ,..... or am I stuck with it till next format.

I think you are getting confused between the BIOS and the hardware
drivers.

A BIOS update changes the contents of the BIOS ROM chip on the
motherboard. Any file that does this will be clearly labelled as a
BIOS update and will have specific instructions. Most often a BIOS
update is installed from a bootable 3.5 inch diskette or bootable CD.
The BIOS setup information, including date and time, will normally
have to be reconfigured after installing a BIOS update.

Hardware drivers, including the drivers for the hardware components of
the motherboard, are computer data files that are stored on the hard
drive for use by the operating system. Most often these drivers are
intended for use with a specific type and version of computer
operating system and therefore the download site will have different
files for different operation systems such as Windows 98, Windows XP,
Linux, etc.

Installing hardware drivers should never impact the BIOS setup
information.

As for the drive letter used by Windows, I am afraid that this would
be extremely difficult to change except by doing a reformat and
reinstall.

Good luck

The format process creates a filesystem that can only be done to an existing
partition. Therefore, a partition was present.

Some motherboard installation driver CDs contain multiple drivers for
different variations of a motherboard, and even different motherboards.
What you're attempting to do with your chosen location on the installation
CD may not be appropriate. The primary drivers for the motherboard's
onboard chipset should be installed before anything else on that CD. Some
provide a autorun feature, in some cases you have to select the proper
motherboard in a dropdown menu.

The bios setup should be entered and altered to not only the user's
preferences, but also in light of any cards added to the motherboard. Any
anticipated unused hardware should be disabled, some examples are any one or
two com ports if no com port device is used or a parallel printer port if
you're using an USB printer, if onboard LAN is present and not used, disable
it. An added video card present, one would disable onboard video. This
should be done prior to installing the operating system and subsequent
motherboard drivers. SATA drivers, if you have SATA and is enabled in the
bios, should be added at the very beginning of the XP install.
