New hard drive and Windows XP password

A

Alex

Just installed a new hard drive (after an operating system
crash on the old one) and now receive an access denied
error when trying to access password protected files on
the original drive. I know the password but need to know
how to make XP ask for it. Help.

Things are not really controlled by the password,
but in NTFS access is controlled by grants to accounts.
After reinstalling you have all new accounts.
To gain access to inaccessible areas, you need to
Take Ownership information about which you can
find in the Help system.
In Home you need to use a safe mode boot. One goes
into the Security dialog in the Properties at the folder
where you have no access, then go to the Owner tab
that is accessed through the Advanced button.
