New Error message appearing "MOM.EXE - .NET Framework Initializati

Hello

Recently my son downloaded a demo game online and today when turning on the
computer we got this message:-

MOM.EXE _.NET Framework Initialization Error
To run this application you must first install one of the following versions
of the .NET Framework v2.0.50727

I've done a spyware scan, and scanned software using Kapersky and everything
is coming up clear and the computer is working but I have no idea what this
message is, what it refers to or if I should be worried.

Please could you tell me what I should do about this message.

Many thanks

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_Framework

net framework is
a microsoft component:

refer to the references
from microsoft or msdn:

http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=NET+Framework+v2.0.50727&FORM=MSNH

the "net frameworks" are also
listed under add/remove programs.

however, since the game
is designed to use the version
in question, then you should
check the site from where the
game was downloaded and
review the faq's and troubleshooting
data sheet first.

Hello DB

I've had a look at where he got this demo download and can't find any pages
with more information

http://videogames.yahoo.com/pc/enemy-territory-quake-wars/file-529579

I've looked at the add and remove programmes and have the following there:-

Microsoft .NET framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 Hotfix (kb928366)

I also did a quick search on mom.exe and came up with this:-

http://www.file.net/process/mom.exe.html

which said it was a catalyst control center: monitoring programe by ATI
Technologies Inc (www.ati.com).

I've searched ati.com and can't find out anything but I checked Add/Remove
programmes and I've got there four things for ati:-

ATI Software uninstall utility
ATI AVIVO codecs
ATI Catalyst control center
ATI Display driver

I am now confused and am not sure if these ATI items are due to the new demo
game he downloaded or if this was already on my computer.

I'm sorry for asking all these questions but I'm stumped what to do.

I've warned him that maybe I'll have to delete his demo game then I can see
if the error still comes up, then if it does I'm assuming I might have to get
some sort of update from somewhere (??) to get rid of this error message.
He's had several games pc and online.

Any advice is gratefully received.

Thank you

yeh,

well basically you could
download the framework
version from microsoft.

your pc likely has a
version of framework installed.

by enabling the show all
option in add/remove control
panel you might see the versions
of framework installed.

however it may not be worth
all the trouble to fiddle
with a "demo" especially
if the site provides
little or no support

further, the pc may be
come unstable or corrupted
if you try to force one program
to work by downloading another
program, then another, etc..

some computers are
especially designed
for gaming, while others
require major upgrading.

i would uninstall it
or do a system restore
to the time before the
demo's installation.

here are some
links with more games:

http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/r...-1##-1~~q66726565~~nc2500##e##4bm&bcatid=2500

http://zone.msn.com/en/root/default.htm

the rule of thumb is that
you create a system restore
point first, then install the game

if the game doesn't work on
the first try and the site provides
no support then remove it asap and
restore your pc.

kids and games are easy targets
for malwares and spybots

Hi DB

Thanks for taking the time to help :)

I went to add/remove programmes and took of quake wars, did a restart and
still got the error message.

Also came up was Steam, which came up before but I didn't realise this was
an extra with the game demo. I just had to close this box and not connect.
(which my son said the game insisted he installed).

I took off Steam from add/remove programmes and have run a search to check
that steam hasn't left anything behind and it has (screenshot link below)

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6s9v8f5&s=1

I did a restart and the error message came up again, so I did a system
restore to before he put this game with attached steam on and the error has
come up again.

I don't know what ATI is or if we put this on our computer or it came with
it, but the list of items with steam (above on screenshot) I am not sure if I
can delete them.

Can you tell me whether I can delete these steam items (screenshot above)
they all seem to be in ati/support folder?

Will this get rid of the error message once deleted and restarted computer,
and if not do you know how I can get rid of this message?

Thank you so much for helping me as and when this is sorted my son is NEVER
going to download any game demos again.

ATI is the video card brand and MOM.exe is one of ATI's driver files, the
Catalyst Control Center monitoring program. It is a regular program
associated with the video driver, not malware.

Your original outdated ATI drivers may have used the older version control
center. New ATI drivers require CCC in order to access the extended video
settings. CCC in turn requires .Net to be installed in order to function.
The latest drivers also offer a free game download, via the Steam game
network. The Steam interface is also required to access those games, however
it is an optional install item when installing the updated video driver.

ok,

the folders for those games can be
directly deleted, that is if the
programs are no
longer visible in the
add/remove programs

a search of that mom.exe file
indicates that it may be related
to the ati programs you mentioned.

here are the links with additional
data:

1) for mom.exe - http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/mom

2) for ati -
http://search.live.com/results.aspx?srch=105&FORM=IE7RE&q=ATI+Technologies+Inc

3) ati drivers - http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

based on number 1, i don't think it is
a spyware or malware. instead the
file is loading and monitoring for
activity that would initiate the
hardware, in this case an ati technology
video game card.

based on number 3, the ati lines
in add/remove programs are associated
to a video game card and are hardware
drivers.

the question that i cannot answer
is if you actually have the piece of hardware
added to your system or not.

my guess is that you may not
have the card installed and your son
wanted to use that steam game.

special cards, i.e. game cards, sound
cards, video cards can be seen
in device manager or if your click
on start, run and msinfo32, you
might find an indication that you
have added an enhanced component
to your system. but my guess is
that you would have been the one
to buy any special components and
would know if you spent 100 bucks
on a special card.

however, you can try this experiment.

make a restore point at this
time. afterwards uninstall those
ati listings mentioned via
the add/remove programs, then
reboot.

if your system boots up normally,
then you are ok. if not, then the
system can be restore with the
"point" you just made and via
the safemode.

i don't think you will encounter
a problem with booting, but if
you do, simply press/tab the f8
key after rebooting to ascertain
the boot menu. then go into
safemode and use the restore point
to restore your system to the
previous state.

let us know your results.

also, since mom.exe is failing to load
then it is likely in the startup
configuration. the question
will be if the uninstallation of
ati removed that mom.exe from
the startup configuration.

Hello Ralf and DB

Thank you both very, very much for replying.

Ralf, you explained it perfectly and I've printed out the information.

DB, you've explained it perfectly too and I've printed out the information
to go through tomorrow morning. It's now 22.45 here in the UK and I daren't
do any more now as I'm tired (don't want to make a mistake) but I will read
everything thoroughly tomorrow and go through all the links you've provided.
Our computer is new and we only got it in January and I know it had graphics
cards etc but I'll do that check you said and see what comes up.

Thank you both so much for helping, because I feel relieved that it isn't
something nasty but I'll need to sort out this error and will report back
tomorrow for more help I expect :)

Take care and thank you.

Hello DB

I read through your instructions and Ralf’s this morning and found out that
I have the ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 SERIES graphics card on my computer.

I contacted a friend who said I should download v3 net framework from
Microsoft and this has got rid of the error message but now gives me another
error message.

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6yzo4de&s=1

I downloaded the game again and this time it didn’t ask to put on Steam (so
after taking that off yesterday with add/remove programmes it just has the
items left that were in the screenshot – I did delete them earlier but that
didn’t help the previous error message so I put them back before downloading
the game to see if that was the problem but it wasn’t)

I was told to look at the drivers and looked but can’t find the radeon
version that I have.

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

I’ve just looked on the downloaded game and there is a website so I am going
to have a look at that and see if that offers any ideas.

I appreciate all your help and if you have any ideas of what I can do next
that would be great.

Thank you very much.

sorry,

here is a better link:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/SupportDrivers/ProcessorSupport/0,,15218_15219,00.html

since you are experiencing
an error code related to mom.exe
and it involves your graphics
card, the section on graphics
is where you can begin the
process of troubleshooting.

but the contact support
link might due for you
since based on my attempt
they have not addressed
an issue like yours in their
knowledge base.

let us know what they
say and do...

Hi DB

I hadn't registered the product so went through on the processor support
form. They've replied with this ...

http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=26494.

I'm not sure this is the correct information as it states "737-26494: Radeon
Series - MOM.implementation or CCC.implementation appear after installing
Catalyst Software Suite" and I hadn't downloaded version 2 but 3 etc ....

I emailed them back with a full explanation and they have just replied
telling me to go to graphics support so I'm going to have to register product
and email them.

I have been doing this all day and am tired but I'll keep you updated.

Thank you so much for helping.

G

ok,

well your a step closer
to resolving the issue.

there may be a compatibility
issue resulting from the v3
framework you downloaded.

however, based on a prior message
from you i thought
you mentioned that version 2 framework
was needed.

in any case, based on the link you sent
me, there is a set of procedures
on the bottom portion whereas
it requires some uninstallations
and then an orderly reinstallation of
framework 2 via their link and then
their ati software.

if you proceed with their recommendation
above, i would certainly uninstall v3 framework since
neither your pc or the game is asking
for this special version of framework.

Hi DB

Yes you are right it did say it wanted v2 but a friend advised to go to v3.

I've just registered and sent in a support ticket and told them everything
I've done/downloaded etc and that's gone through to the graphics support.

I'm signing off now as I've been on this computer fiddling with this all day
and it's now nearly 20.30.

I have printed out the instructions from the processor support but haven't
touched anything and will see what graphics support says.

I'll update you tomorrow and I appreciate all your help very much :)

If I had known putting on this demo game would cause all this trouble I
would never have installed it, but you live and learn.

Can't swear by it but AFAIK .NET versions are not upgrades from each other,
they are just different, so if ver.2 is specified then that is the one you
need.

Hello Ralf

I received an auto response which didn't answer or look at my query so I've
replied to them and are awaiting a response from graphics support.

I've looked at driver upgrades but am a bit worried about downloading and
fiddling more.

Would it be advisable to do a restore to before I downloaded v3 and all the
updates from windows xp, before I put the game back etc and download v2 which
was the initial error message?

I've checked add/remove programmes and although I only downloaded v3 it
seems that v2 is there too (net.framework)

R

RalfG

You can set a new restore point certainly, in case you run into more
problems. It's hard to say though just what situation doing a system restore
at this point will leave you with , it could be worse. There's no need to
remove .Net 3.

You'll probably end up having to reinstall the drivers anyways so I'd leave
system restore alone at this point and concentrate directly on eliminating
the problems generating your errors. A clean driver installation using the
correct driver for the Express 200 chipset is important, so use the ATI
software removal utility to uninstall the currently installed drivers.

The driver you need to download for your ATI chipset is different than the
one I would need for mine, even though the Catalyst version number is 7.10
for both. That's because the Xpress 200 is an integrated graphics chipset
which also includes the graphics subsystem hardware on the motherboard. You
should note that there is an Xpress 200 chipset and also an Xpress 200M
chipset. Also get the appropriate driver for your version of XP.

Assuming that your computer is running 32bit XP Home or Pro, the name of
your downloaded driver file should begin with "7-10-igp_xp32". That is the
one that includes support for the integrated graphics chipset. If you
already have a driver file that begins with "7-10_xp32" it is the wrong
driver (incomplete) for your system.

Direct link to the XP Home/Pro driver download page is here:

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp

For other versions of XP use this page to find the correct driver (always
pick Integrated/Motherboard in the second column):

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Instead of installing the current version of the driver you could opt to
revert back to your original drivers. In that case you'd have to source the
drivers from the computer manufacturer or on your system recovery discs.

Hello Ralf

I got a reply and followed graphics support (email) instructions and that
was the page that you quoted too:-

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp

I did the first download link CATALYST SOFTWARE SUITE and followed the
instructions and it downloaded with Steam and Earthsim. I rebooted and the
error came back.

I have since called a UK support number and he is supposed to be calling
back once he's looked into this .

I didn't know how to do/or that I had to do a clean driver installation and
I've checked the box with discs that came with this computer and can't find
any driver/ati discs.
A clean driver installation using the correct driver for the Express 200 chipset is important, so use the ATI
software removal utility to uninstall the currently installed drivers.

I've just looked at add/remove programmes and can see the uninstall so
should I do this now and then go back and do the above from the link?
The driver you need to download for your ATI chipset is different than the
one I would need for mine, even though the Catalyst version number is 7.10
for both. That's because the Xpress 200 is an integrated graphics chipset

I've just looked in the c: programme files to see what is in the ATI Support
folder and it lists the following:-

6-11-pre-r300_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_38185
7-11_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_53250
7-10-igp_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_sb_gart_enu_53250 (this is the one I downloaded)
hotfix_8.413.2_xp_32-64_53786
For other versions of XP use this page to find the correct driver (always
pick Integrated/Motherboard in the second column):

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
I have looked at this page and this is where I found the download (didn't
download until I got the graphics support email telling me too)

I've just had another email from graphics support which proves they aren't
reading the emails and keep sending me the link
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp which I've
told them I've done and it hasn't sorted out the error.

Any ideas of what to do next would be appreciated and in the meantime I'm
going to chase up the person I spoke to in the UK since it's been a few hours
now.

I appreciate all the help both you and db have given me.

I've just got through to support and although I spoke with David (he
insisted he hadn't spoken to me earlier!) I've now been told to do the
following:-

Uninstall Catalyst Control Center
Reboot
Uninstall .Net Framework 2.0 - told me to uninstall v2 and v3 and not worry
about the additional windows updates that came up after installing v3.
Reboot
Reinstall .Net Framework 2.0 from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en
Reboot
Reinstall Catalyst Control Center - get this from link ...
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp
Reboot (can do)

This should then sort out the error message??

I'm completely fed up because I didn't imagine talking to a David and giving
him details earlier, and I'm not impressed with their customer service but
I'm going to have a go and see what happens.

They need to remember that not all of us are computer minded ...
