New copy of USB Printer everytime I power it on

I often keep my USB printer powered off or connected to a different
computer. When I power it on (or reconnect it), W2K finds a new device
and installs a new copy. How do I get it to recognize the default
printer and not recreate it?

I solved a similar situation by installing the vendor-supplied drivers.
("have disk".) Did you not install them, maybe?

Thanks -- I uninstalled printers & drivers on the W2K machine,
reinstalled vendor drivers & all worked fine. Oddly it was the
opposite on an XP machine: i uninstalled vendor drivers & let XP use
its own.
