Hi,

I just bought a new HP laptop actually equiped with Windows VISTA Home
Premium Edition. As I target this computer mainly for software development
and leisure I would have a few questions:

- If I install any other softwares, mainly development softwares I use
right now, can I upgrade later to "VISTA Ultimate" version without screwing
up anything I just installed/configured? Will I have to re-install anything?

- Adding folders to the Startup menu "All Programs"... The only way I
could add any folder is to create a new one on the desktop and then drag it
on the "Start Menu" button to finally move it into proper place into menu.
Is there any easier way to do this?

Many thanks for help,

Stéphane

Yes, you can upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate Edition without it
affecting your personal files or settings, just choose the upgrade option
when you insert the Vista Ultimate DVD.

From Keith Miller [MVP]
Quote:
"The easist way to determine what is launched at startup & where it comes
from is to run 'msconfig.exe' and look at the 'Startup' tab.

Having said that, here are the specifics:

To open the Startup folders, in the 'Start Search' box on the Start Menu,
type:

shell:common startup<Enter>
shell:startup<Enter>

The paths are:
"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
"C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup"

Registry keys are:
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce"
"HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
"HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce"

Huh?
Just right click the Start Orb, choose 'Open All Users', create shortcuts,
folders, drag/drop as you please.

Hi Andre,

The first part of your post really answered my first question. Many
thanks for infos.

For my second question, I didn't follow you probably because my question
was maybe not asked properly from start. Here is my problem I will try to
explain better with the little experience I have so far on VISTA.

Accessing menu using the "Start" button, at the bottom of left pane there
is a "All programs" option I can click to access the "All Programs" menu
which is the one I would like to customize. From there the only way I could
add any new folder is to create it on desktop and then drag it onto menu.
Any easier/proper way to do this?

Thanks for help, really appreciated!

Stéphane

Clicking on the "Start button" on the taskbar gives me access to the
"Start Menu" which by the way I kept in default view mode.

Hi Max,

Caught your post after replying to Andre. Tried your suggestion. That is
exactly what I was looking for! My life will certainly be easier this way...
;)

Many thanks for help.

Case closed!
