After the replacement of a certain quantity of hardware, phone
activation may be required:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

Simply choose the option to activate by phone.
Call the displayed number to Microsoft.
Done in about 5 minutes.

The issue may also be related to your time being incorrect.
Check your time zone as well.

I have had my xp pro well over 1 1/2 years... and was wondering why all of a
sudden I have to call Microsoft to activate windows... I have been using my
cd keys that came with the software without any hassles till now. the only
thing that I have done was replace my mother board twice and have done fresh
reinstall of my o.s. once in a while just so I can have a clean minty
system.

so why doesn't the keys that came with my o.s. not work anymore?

The key worked, but as it was when you originally installed, you have to
ACTIVATE your copy.

Because you changed major components more than once in 120 days.
(Which would look suspiciously like trying to install the same copy/license of Windows XP on more than one PC that it is licensed for..)
