New CD/DVD drive not being detected when older one is

Shyyk

I just bought an HP dvd840 DVD Writer. I hooked it up when I first got it
without installing anything and it worked by just messing around with it. Now,
I cant get it to do anything, I dont know how it worked at first. But, I have
an older cd drive that works just fine. I have to get this new one working so
that I can reinstall City of Heroes because my old cd drive wont read DVD's
and this version of City of Heroes is a DVD. Help Please?

Try messing around again with the instruction manual, don't forget to mess
around with the jumpers too, may need to try different settings.. While your
messing around might as well make sure the data cable and power cable are
snug on the drive and on the mobo.. Remember not to mess around unless you
have turned off the power and are grounded..

What burning software have you been messing around with, did it come with
the new drive or the old drive that works..? Also look at the jumper settings
on the drive that works and match those settings on the new drive..
Cheers

You need to set the drive as "master" or "Slave" by setting the jumper
appropriately.

If running off the same IDE cable, then one drive is "master" the other one
has to be "slave".

If running it off the IDE cable which has a HDD attached, the DVD/CD drive
becomes the "primary slave" while the HDD is the "primary master". (or
secondary master/slave as the case may be).

Once this is set, start the system, press "DEL" (or appropriate key) toenter
the BIOS, and check the drive detection options, to make sure all drives are
being detected.

Then save/exit BIOS and reboot.
