new Canon printers - iP3000

Martin Trautmann

Hi all,

how do you feel about the new Canon printers, e.g. comparing the current
i560 and its successor iP3000?

Two paper slots, cd printing, higher weight - everything sounds better
than the current model!?

How about the new print head in 'FINE': Full-photolithography Inkjet
Nozzle Engineering?

Will it offer better or worse quality?
How about refilled ink?
How about refilling itself?

I suppose it's too early for practical experiences, since the models
will ship from August on - but maybe there are some early test reviews?

Kind regards
Martin

Didn't see any mention of "2 paper slots or cd printing" on the info
at Canon. The info does mention 2 paper paths for built-in 2 sided
printing. Perhaps, your info is from another source? If cd printing
is available, then I can wait to replace the epson...clogged heads.

I had a canon pj-1080a which had to be dumped because radio shack
no longer supplied ink to a product that was discontinued for 10 yrs...:(
Have tried HP & Epson, & think will have better luck in going back
to canon.

Maybe I did not understand this properly:

The iP3000 printer also adds a second independent paper source. In
addition to the standard auto sheet feeder, the front-loading paper
cassette tray expands the usability by allowing the user to load 4" x 6"
and 5" x 7" paper in addition to letter-sized media in either paper
source.

Does it include duplex prints by default?

the PIXMA iP3000 Photo Printer also includes a fully functional
auto-duplex unit that automatically reroutes the page for properly
formatted two-sided printing. Both time-saving and paper-saving, the
iP3000 printer is the first consumer printer at this price point to
feature automatic duplex printing built-in.

Concerning CD-printing: I did not find this info on the US site, but
e.g. on

http://www.canon.de/presse/infos/dru/pixma_ip3000_4000/$u

Im Lieferumfang enthalten sind sowohl die beiden Papierkassetten, als
auch die Duplexeinheit und die Führung für den Direktdruck auf geeignete
CDs/DVDs.

(free translation: included are both paper cassettes, the duplex unit
and the guide for direct printing for CD/DVD)

The alternate paper path could be like my HP 5MP that has a separate
path that is nearly a straight-thru feed & exit if one remembers to
open the backdoor; this is useful for envelopes & label type media.

I think I came across a translated(?) review/announcement/press that the
ip3000 did do CD-printing(!?) in google.

It could be another Canon thingy for the ability to do CD-printing on their
printers everywhere else except in the US (North America?).

Will wait for the ip3000 to appear as the front loading of paper is more
convienent for me because of the location of where the printer will be
stored.

Yes, but that's a one-piece-of-paper-only-path. To my understanding
there's one slot on the top for 'drop-in-paper' (more sheets than
before? about 50 or 150?) and a cassette of its own at the front.

I doubt so. The major difference that I've seen up to now is the ability
to print bank notes: German drivers don't permit to print Euro notes and
may take much more print time since they have to check whether it
actually is a bank note.

I don't see any reason not to permit CD printing - it's still a standard
feature for many current Canon printers. On the other hand I'd recommend
neither to print nor to put stickers on a CD. I feel it's nice, but who
knows about later problems...

same to me: it seems to be much better in many ways. But there's no free
cheese, I'm afraid. Where's the problems?

Kind regards,
Martin, paranoid ;-)

I did another check with google with "ip3000" as a search
criteria and found that "www.canon-europe.com" do have specs
that say the ip3000 will print onto printable CD-R/DVD media!!!
SAME MODEL NUMBER/ID!!!! The specs say that there is an INPUT
tray for CD-R/DVD; nothing about a tray for the 4x5 photo
sheet (same tray but cannot say use for CD-R in the US?).

"www.canon.co.uk" also say that the ip3000 does print onto
printable CD-R/DVD. As you are in Europe (according to the
id), you will get the supported/acknowledged CD-R/DVD printing.

Now, why doesn't the USA Canon say the same capability?

Anyway, August is just a week away & am in no hurry even
if I just junked the Epson. The built-in 2-sided printing
capability will come in handy occassionally.

Wonder if the printer can be imported to Canada then gotten
into the US.......

.... that depends; August is still a full month away ;-)
(since first delivery at end of august is still august)

capability will come in handy occassionally.

Same for me, while I may add some weeks until the price settles down
closer to 100 EUR / 100 USD: i550 startet at 199 EUR and was available
at 150..180 EUR some weeks later. The i560 was available at about 129
EUR, while it was recommended as 179 EUR, I guess. Recently the official
recommendation dropped down to 129 EUR, while some street prices are
below 100 EUR.

Official start price of the iP3000 is 129 EUR / 129 USD?

BTW: current exchange rate: 1 USD = 0.80 EUR; prices are significantly
higher in Germany...

Martin
