***NEW*** Ad-Aware SE!!

C

Chuck

Just getting the word out about the new version of adaware
SE.....appears to do a lot that the old one didn't....
It found 346 more bugs and 2 registry trackers that Spybot
didn't find, and its scan was lightning fast.

What is up with Spybot, I've checked for updates but there
hasn't been none in like months? I like its ability to lock down
IE, and so forth, that's one reason I want to keep it, but is it
still being supported? Any news or links on what is up with
Spybot?

But anyhow, here is a link to Lavasoft just look for the SE
link on the right of the page!!!

Here is some of the new stuff it can do, pretty kewl

"With the ability to scan your RAM, registry, hard drives, and external
storage devices for known data-mining, advertising, and tracking components,
Ad-aware SE easily can clean your system, allowing you to maintain a higher
degree of privacy while you surf the Web.

Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition boasts a number of improvements. Extended
memory scanning now scans all modules loaded by a process. Scanning uses the
all- new CSI (Code Sequence Identification) technology to identify new and
unknown variants of known targets. Extended registry scanning now scans
registry branches of multiple-user accounts and performs additional smart
checks to detect dynamically created references. Scanning speed is
noticeably faster, and this version offers an Extended Scanning mode for
known and unknown/possible browser hijackers....

My latest update for Spybot is August 11.
Be sure you're running the latest verion: Spybot 1.3 dated July 28

Thank-you, and that was the problem.

I was running an older version. I went and uninstalled the old version, and
then got the latest version and all updates and low and behold it found a
few things Ad-Aware SE missed including yet another registry entry. Ughhh,
Yes it is true that you got to run more than one program to just break even
in watching over all this spy-ware junk.

Spy-bot is alive and well, and doing just fine.

Thanks once again
Chuck

For some reason, they aren't very good on alerting users about new
upgrades. I found out about it by accident, reading through these NGs
An excellent program - and I recommend using their immunize function
after running it and getting rid of any malware.

I've tried the new version, and so far I'm not impressed. The Favorites
checking is useless -- dozens of false positives. Perhaps the scanning is
faster, but you can't tell by watching because (I assume) it's scanning
more things. The result is that a scan takes longer than before. So far
it hasn't found anything aside from the usual tracking cookies and two
pieces of a CoolWeb variant that I knew were there in a safe location.
This could be a good thing, but how am I to know that?

,Hi Chuck,
Is Ad-Aware a free download? I have a Windows 98 Second Edition 63.0MB Ram
,also dialup. So it's a slow moving computer lol. Just wondering if it's
beneficial for me to use Ad-aware. Any download software always slows down my
computer. I can't even use Earthlink 2005 version to download,it slows down
my computer. Any suggestions?
Thank You
Paula

You really need 128megs of ram to run 98SE so it won't be putting your hard
drive through swap-file hell. That is one reason your machine will seem to
run slow. Right now nothing else would matter cause without at least
128megs of ram your computer is not going to be able to function. Bump up
your memory first, and then see how your machine runs, and then look at
other things. Matter of fact, forget 128megs of ram cause I think 256megs
of PC-100 would only be around $25.00, and your machine would then have
plenty of breathing room, and run well.

I've gotten to the point now that I feel the need to have
at least 2 to 3 Spyware scanners cause one will always
find something the others missed. I do like Spybot now
that I got it all updated, it seems to really keep an eye
out for most of the Spybugs.

I think it all boils down to what you like.

FWIW...
Spybot S&D v1.3 is the latest AFAIK but I read somewhere recently that
the guy who develops it will be pulling out because some new forms of
spy bugs use techniques that he doesn't know how to deal with.
