Never noticed before: "-" vs. "-"

Why is it that in Microsoft Office 2007, at the end of a line that has "-â€,
it changes from a short and thick "-" to a slightly longer and thinner one
when I press [enter] or when I type it immediately before a word, then
[space] is entered. It is a little complicated to explain how to predict
when it will or will not happen, it simply takes a few experiments to see it
for yourself.

Such as:

abcd -
[enter]
abcd -efgh
[enter]

Those are two different ways that it occurs.

Word is converting a hyphen to an en dash. This is an AutoFormat As You Type
operation.
